Social Worker at summer residential math program (Bard College & Union College)

Vacancy expired!

This summer, lead the growth of an intense, vibrant community of young scholars in mathematics.

Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics, a project of the Art of Problem Solving Initiative, invites applications for its Social Worker position. You'll be a part of the leadership team for our three-week residential BEAM Summer Away program, which gives everyone a chance to excel in mathematics. At BEAM Summer Away, students in the summer after 7th grade learn advanced math and create deep friendships in a close-knit summer environment.

This position brings together a leadership role at the program in addition to a social work component helping students and advising staff. Key responsibilities include:

Providing counseling and support for students, especially helping those students who are having difficulty adjusting to the program or who may simply need someone they trust to talk to.

Supporting staff to provide emotional support to students.

Communicating with families about student progress.

Running one to two activities each day.

Participating in evening free time, which includes supervising students; running hall meetings every other day; and supervising counselors as they assign students to daily activities.

Attending weekend field trips.

Communicating with parents as needed.

In general, contributing to an amazing summer experience.

All applicants should have an MSW or a comparable credential as well as experience supervising and coordinating kids. Beyond that background, we are looking for someone who is dedicated to creating an exceptional experience for students; who can be a strong leader among the staff; and who can communicate well with both students and parents. Additional pluses include some level of counseling experience, summer program experience, fluency in Spanish or other common languages among our families, an interest in mathematics, and experience with making decisions under time pressure.

The Social Worker lives in the dorms with students and staff, and must be available for our entire session dates including staff training (July 4-July 31). The program runs for three weeks, from Sunday to Sunday. Students will be on campus from July 7 to July 28. Staff are expected to arrive a few days early and leave a few days late. Before the camp we will be preparing courses and dealing with the logistics of camp setup, while after the camp we will be evaluating the outcomes and cleaning up. The program runs on the campuses of Bard College and Union College (we are also hiring for a comparable role in Southern California). There may also be a few hours of planning before the summer to prepare to lead parts of staff training.

The salary for the summer Social Worker is $4,500 plus room, board, and travel to/from our campus. If you return for future years, you will receive an increased salary based on the number of summers in the same position. We hope that you will also see the program as we do: a labor of love that reaches the students most in need, and a program with the potential to have a transformative effect on achievement in mathematics and related fields.

Please send a cover letter and resume to our email. We will reply back and successful applicants will proceed to an interview.
