Location: Binghamton, NY Category: Professional Posted On: Fri Dec 13 2024 Job Description: Budget Title: Senior Counselor (SL-4)Salary: $72,000 - $80,000Binghamton University's Athletics Department and University Counseling Center (UCC) seek a full-time, 12-month renewable position with benefits for a counselor providing mental health counseling and outreach services to Division I student-athletes. This is a generalist position with strong preference for candidates who have interest and experience working in a collegiate athletics setting. Duties of the position include short-term individual and group counseling, outreach and psychoeducation, crisis counseling, initial assessment, and consultation and liaison relationships with Athletics staff.The focus will be on a range of generalist mental health concerns with primarily student-athletes, including issues such as stress and anxiety, personal or relationship concerns, depression, mild to moderate mental health issues, and developmental or academic concerns. There will also be both clinical and outreach focus on student-athlete specific issues such as: sports performance, injury rehabilitation, and student-athlete identity development. While the position is primarily clinical, this position will provide substantive outreach and psycho-educational workshops to student-athletes and athletics staff. The Athletics Specialist will work collaboratively with welcoming and engaged Athletic staff, trainers, and coaches as well as with the interdisciplinary team in the Health and Counseling Department. Master's or Doctorate degree in psychology, social work, mental health counseling, or related clinical field.

Licensure to practice in New York, or eligibility for licensure to practice in New York by start date. This could include eligibility for a limited permit or being in final year of doctoral supervision toward licensure.

Generalist clinical skills and experience in assessing and intervening with a range of disorders and presenting concerns. Experience or willingness to use a brief therapy model.

Knowledge and understanding of the unique needs and challenges of the college student-athlete population. Strong interest or experience in working with athletes, coaches, or athletic teams.

Strong multicultural awareness, knowledge, responsiveness, and skills to work with culturally diverse student populations.

Ability to handle a busy caseload in a dynamic environment while completing appropriate charting and administrative tasks.

Proficiency in oral and written communication skills, giving presentations, and leading group discussions.

Strong work ethic and a willingness to collaborate. Ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advance planning.

Team-oriented, "user-friendly" approach to students and university staff.

Availability and willingness to participate in occasional evening or weekend activities.

Preferred:Preference may be given to candidates with the following experience or knowledge. Please articulate any preferred qualifications you have in your cover letter:

LCSW credential, LMHC, or Doctorate in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or related field. ABD's will be considered; post-doctoral supervision for licensure can be provided.

Experience as a collegiate student-athlete or coach.

Experience with psychological issues related to student athletes such as performance enhancement, athletics consultations, student athlete identity development, and/or injury and rehabilitation in competitive athletics.

Knowledge of NCAA rules, including adherence to professional, legal ethical and professional standards endorsed by licensing organizations.

Experience in a higher education counseling center and/or with young adults in a clinical setting.

Active participation in relevant professional organizations.
