IME Contract Physicians

An "IME physician," or Independent Medical Examiner, is a licensed doctor who conducts medical evaluations on individuals, typically at the request of insurance companies, employers, or lawyers, to provide an objective assessment of a patient's condition, usually regarding a disputed injury related to work, motor vehicle, or disability claim, without forming a traditional doctor-patient relationship, and then produces a detailed report outlining their findings and opinions on the case; their primary responsibility is to evaluate the extent of an injury and assess whether a person is able to return to work or perform certain activities, not to provide ongoing treatment.

Specialties Needed:

Orthopedics

Neurology

Occupational medicine

Physiatry

Pain management

Psychiatry (for mental health related claims)

Requirement

Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.

Board certification in relevant specialty preferred.

Valid medical license to practice in the state of employment.

Previous experience in a clinical setting is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

Reviewing medical records: Thoroughly examining the patient's medical history, treatment plans, and imaging results provided by their treating physician.

Conducting a physical examination: Performing a focused physical exam relevant to the disputed injury or condition, including range of motion tests, strength assessments, and functional evaluations.

Asking specific questions: Obtaining detailed information about the patient's symptoms, work history, and activities of daily living to understand the impact of the injury.

Providing an impartial opinion: Formulating a medical opinion based on their examination findings, not necessarily aligning with the treating physician's diagnosis, and addressing specific questions posed by the requesting party.

Writing a comprehensive report: Creating a detailed report outlining the examination findings, diagnosis, functional limitations, and conclusions regarding the patient's medical condition and ability to work. The company provides a team that will help to complete reports.

No ongoing care: They do not provide ongoing treatment or manage the patient's care after the IME.

The IME will review medical records and often examine the examinee. Then do a case review and write a report, and perhaps testify at a deposition or trial or hearing. The company provides a team that will help to review records.
