Now Hiring: Temporary Surveyors for the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry Replacement Study
We are seeking motivated, reliable individuals to join our survey team for a vital data collection project supporting the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry Replacement Study. This opportunity is ideal for personable, punctual candidates interested in gaining valuable fieldwork experience and contributing to an important transportation initiative in the Newburgh and Beacon, NY areas.
Position Details:
- Type: Temporary, part-time survey positions
- Locations: Various transit stops within the project area
- Shifts:
- Morning: Approximately 4:45 AM – 8:45 AM
- Evening: Approximately 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM
- Training: Paid training sessions scheduled at a designated location to ensure familiarity with survey protocols and data collection procedures
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in paid training to learn survey methodologies
- Conduct passenger surveys and ridership counts on the MTA Substitute Line and Stewart Airport-Newburgh-Beacon Leprechaun Line
- Administer surveys in both English and Spanish using paper forms or tablets, capturing rider destinations
- Monitor route activity by recording boardings, alightings, and ridership data at each stop for every trip
Qualifications & Skills:
- Dependability and punctuality are essential
- Strong communication skills to professionally engage with passengers, drivers, and supervisors
- Comfort with using smartphones, tablets, and navigation tools such as Google Maps
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, including early mornings and evenings, and standing for extended periods (up to 8 hours)
- Reliable personal transportation to reach survey locations
Additional Information:
- Paid training will be provided to ensure accurate data collection
- Smart devices are required for app-based check-in/out via Connecteam, which includes GPS tracking and real-time shift management
- Accurate synchronization of app check-in/out times with onsite sign-in sheets is mandatory
- Preference given to candidates committed to the full project duration

Fielding dates: October 7–9, 2023
Sample Shift Breakdown:
Tuesday, October 7
- MTA Line: 8 total needed (can be reduced to 4 with shift adjustments)
- Shifts from approximately 4:30 AM to 9:06 PM, with 1–2 persons per shift
Wednesday, October 8
- MTA Line: 8 total needed (can be reduced to 4 with shift adjustments)
- Leprechaun Line: 5 total needed, one per shift, from early morning to late evening
Thursday, October 9
- MTA Line: 8 total needed (can be reduced to 4 with shift adjustments)
- Shifts similar to Tuesday and Wednesday
