NYS Dept. of Transportation is currently hiring for a Professional Engineer 1 in its Bridge Maintenance Dept.

Minimum Qualifications:

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the minimum

qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:

Open Competitive:

Either 1. a New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration AND a qualifying bachelor's

degree or higher as listed below;

Or 2. a New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration AND one year of full-time

qualifying engineering experience as listed below.

Qualifying degrees: Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction

Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management

Technology, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering,

Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering,

Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning and Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized

concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.

Qualifying experience: One year of full-time engineering experience with transportation projects related to

highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and

safety systems.

Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate

Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

Professional Engineer 1 (Civil/Transportation) is a continuous recruitment examination for promotional

candidates only. All interested promotional candidates must complete their online application here: New York

State Career Opportunities in Engineering (ny.gov). There is no fee for this examination. The minimum

qualifications are:

Promotional: You must have a New York State Professional Engineer's License and current registration AND be

a qualified employee of New York State AND have had one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service

as follows: Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation).

Duties Description:

The primary function of the Bridge Maintenance Program Engineer shall be to guide Bridge Operations through

the development of an annual work plan which is consistent with the goals of the Regional Bridge Maintenance

Engineer. The Bridge Maintenance Program Engineer will receive, review, and monitor the Bi-Weekly work plans

submitted by the Bridge Crew Supervisors.

The Bridge Maintenance Program Engineer shall be the clearinghouse for all PIA Safety Flags and Structural

Flags. This is to include flag tracking, coordination with the Assistant Bridge Maintenance Engineer – Field

Operations to deploy resources to address all Red Structural Flags and PIA Safety Flags within their respective

required timeframes and/or recommendation of Where and When requests to address issues beyond the

capabilities of Bridge Maintenance Forces.

The Bridge Maintenance Program Engineer shall be responsible for all necessary engineering design and detail

preparation for both infrastructure and facilities, as necessary. The Bride Maintenance Program Engineer shall

perform all required review of projects and plans.

The Bridge Maintenance Program Engineer shall act on the Regional Bridge Maintenance Engineers behalf

during absences and as so directed.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the

department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
