Diesel mechanic and diesel service technicians will perform a variety of tasks to inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel-powered vehicles and machines:
Read work orders and discuss problems and solutions
Inspect vehicles: Check brake systems, steering mechanisms, transmissions, engines, and other parts
Run diagnostic tests: Use computerized systems and testing equipment to identify problems
Repair and replace parts: Fix or replace malfunctioning components, parts, and other mechanical or electrical equipment
Perform maintenance: Change oil, check fluid levels, and rotate tires
Test-drive vehicles: Ensure that vehicles run smoothly after repairs
Write reports: Create detailed inspection reports and repair plans
Present reports and plans to management for approval
Follow all motor vehicle repair shop regulations and standards
Diesel mechanics may also work with specialized machinery, such as combines or tracked vehicles. You may need to lift, carry, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crawl, climb, and balance frequently.
