Job Summary:
The Network and Communications Technician plays a vital role in maintaining the College’s data networks and unified communications systems, combining hands-on work with technical problem-solving. This two-year role involves installing, configuring, testing, and performing maintenance on network and phone system hardware, providing first-level technical support, and working closely with teams across the College to ensure stable/secure connectivity and effective communication. Ideal candidates are hands-on thinkers who enjoy physical tasks, troubleshooting, and ensuring reliable network and phone system performance.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Provide first-level troubleshooting and technical support for network and phone system issues, escalating complex cases to senior team members as needed.
Perform regular checks and assist with the monitoring, installation, configuration, and maintenance of network and telephony equipment, ensuring stable and secure wired and wireless connectivity and effective communication lines across campus.
Diagnose and resolve basic phone system issues, including cloud voice setups, handset troubleshooting, and phone line configurations.
Support edge switch and wireless access point deployment, assisting in the installation and maintenance of edge switches and wireless access points under the direction of the Network Operations Technical Lead.
Deploy Ethernet and fiber optic cabling to support network and telephony infrastructure across campus.
Support campus events and department installations by setting up network and phone connections, working closely with other IT staff to meet requirements.
Organize and maintain network closets, ensuring cables are properly managed, equipment is labeled, and phone system components are accessible and operational.
Document changes, configurations, and troubleshooting steps for network and telephony equipment.
Rotate on-call duties with another Network and Communications Technician.
Actively contribute to team meetings and knowledge-sharing sessions to stay informed about ongoing projects and team objectives.
Lift and transport network, telephony, and communications equipment as needed, making physical tasks a significant part of this role.
Additional Responsibilities:
Help manage and maintain an accurate inventory of network, phone system, and cabling equipment.
Engage in ongoing training and development opportunities to enhance network, IT, and telephony troubleshooting skills.
Contribute to a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive College environment in all interactions with staff, faculty, students, and campus visitors.
Qualifications:
Education & Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent. An Associate's degree or technical certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA) are preferred but not required.
Experience: At least 2 years of general IT troubleshooting experience, which may include experience with phone systems or relevant experience gained through educational programs like BOCES, service desk, or similar technical training.
Skills: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, excellent communication abilities, and enjoyment of hands-on, physical work.
Other Requirements: Meet the requirements to drive a college vehicle. Valid New York State driver’s license (or ability to obtain one) and the ability to lift and carry equipment up to 60 pounds.
Work Environment:
The work environment is primarily indoors but involves physical tasks, such as lifting, bending, and kneeling to set up and maintain equipment. Some exposure to dust and other elements may occur when working in data closets or network areas.
This position is a two-year assignment, 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.

Hiring Range:
$25 to $27 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
