We’re looking for a female companion for our 81 year old father in Easton (moving to Ridgefield when house sells) to support a healthy, active and somewhat independent lifestyle for him. He is deeply depressed after losing our mother 3 years ago, then his girlfriend in May in a terrible accident where he was driving, a TBI in August, and now he is not able to drive, selling our home of 50 years and facing financial stress.
But all is not lost. The ideal candidate will have confidence in her vision for helping him eat well, lose weight, exercise, get his license back, and beat his depression. Someone to talk with him and support him as he deals with challenges, recent losses and downsizing. Encouraging walking, chess, music and social activities is important.
He needs a healthy role model who eats clean and cooks well: someone who will ensure he has a nutritious lunch and dinner each day and engage him in meal planning and prep (not be a personal chef). Planning and preparing meals for the friends or family members coming over, and light housekeeping (especially as the house is being shown) is also an important part of the role.
We do not need a CNA. Our Dad is in very good physical health for 82, but needs companionship. We know that with the right support he can spend his golden years feeling much happier and being productive. Hours are flexible and can include weekends. My sister and I are nearby in Weston & Katonah.
Job Description:
Review plans for the day, make time at least 3 days a week for a walk and some light stretching of his shoulders / back to maintain mobility.
Ensure he is taking his pills correctly and has adequate supply.
Ensure he is showered, dressed, hydrated, had a nutritious breakfast (fruit & yogurt instead of sugary raisin bran & granola). If he does this by 10 am every day it will support his self-esteem.
Encourage him to stay engaged actively with his business
Be a caring and active listener for his concerns
Drive to appointments as needed
Ensure he drinks a glass of water every few hours. NO Alcohol.
Plan & cook a healthy lunch with him
Maintain refrigerator so food is not wasted. Prepare lists for grocery shopping and shop with him, providing guidance on nutrition.
Short mid-day nap as needed
When he wants downtime, help him find something uplifting or thoughtful on TV.
Help coordinate/facilitate social plans as needed to keep him occupied and engaged with friends and family.
Check-in on text or phone with one or both daughters after each day with him.
Plan & prep dinner (including occasional company)
Prep a little fresh fruit for the next day’s breakfast
Housekeeping as needed. He’s very neat, does own laundry & there’s a monthly housekeeper.
Please send resume or bio, references, mobile phone and your location to apply. We plan to talk with candidates immediately, meet the short list over the weekend if possible and hopefully try out one or two selected candidates next week. We look forward to hearing from you!
