About the Internship
Daveed Baptiste Studio is looking for a creative and Skilled Design Intern to join our team in Long Island City, New York. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to contribute to the design and production process of innovative menswear garments. As a Design Intern, you will assist in creating prototypes, material swatches, and tech packs, as well as participate in fittings and collaborate with our freelance sample makers and factories. You will also help with studio organization and research, including sourcing materials from thrift stores and the Materials for the Arts warehouse. This is a unique chance to work directly with Daveed Baptiste and his collaborators while gaining valuable experience in sustainable and artisanal fashion design.
About the Brand:
Daveed Baptiste Studio specializes in fashion design and photography, crafting bespoke, artisanal menswear with a focus on sustainability and creative reuse. Located at Materials for the Arts, we transform recycled materials into visionary designs.
Key Responsibilities:
Create prototypes and material swatches, including pattern making and sewing.
Develop and update tech packs and presentations.
Conduct research, including sourcing materials from thrift stores and the Materials for the Arts warehouse.
Maintain and organize the studio space.
Assist in design development, attend fittings, and liaise with freelance sample makers and factories.
Qualifications:
Available to work two days a week in our Queens studio.
Proficient in sewing, with knowledge of menswear construction.
Skilled in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Passionate about the arts, fashion, and menswear design history, styles, and trends.
Denim knowledge is a plus.
Familiarity with the garment district is essential.
Keen eye for apparel graphics, placements, and compositions.
