Performs responsible technical work overseeing and participating in field clerical work reading water and electric meters, completing work orders, repairing and maintaining meters, and related tasks.Responsible for reading water and electric meters on an assigned route. Other tasks include connecting and disconnecting water service, repair and replacement of water meters, investigating leaks and answering customer questions. Employees upload and download routes into the hand held meter reading computer and/or radio read equipment and inquires on the customer data base to determine if payment has been made. Public contact is required in answering citizens' questions about meter readings, high usage or bills, leaks, etc Employees are subject to hazards of vicious animals and work must be performed in various kinds of weather. Work exposes the employee to inside and outside environments, extreme temperatures, and hazards found in meter reading duties. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated on the basis of complaint activity, effectiveness of the meter maintenance program, and accuracy of readings taken and records made.Essential Duties
Reads water and electric meters on assigned routes and records readings using hand held computer recording device, electronic reading wand, radio read or manual records and work orders; uploads and downloads meter reading computer.
Explains meter readings to citizens; answers questions of a general nature on meter readings; delivers door tags for late payments and insufficient funds checks.
Inspects meters for damage or malfunctioning parts; cleans meters; clears mud debris and other matter from meter cases; places seals on meters; installs or replaces meters.
Connects or disconnect service in response to moving customers or nonpayment; installs medical seals.
Conducts special readings or re-readings; searches for leaks; connects or disconnects meters or water service; checks to see that meters are functioning properly and reports any defects not otherwise resolved.
Inquiries into customer data base for current account status.
Operates pickup truck to and from meter routes.
Assists in the maintenance and cleaning of facilities and work areas.
Prepares and completes work orders and other records of work activities.
Hangs notices on customers door knobs regarding needs to trim bushes, confine dogs, leak findings, etc.
Picks up and delivers mail; brings boxes of bills, envelopes or other supplies needed for billing from warehouse to City Hall.
May assist with or perform electrical maintenance and repair.
Other duties as assigned.
QualificationsRequired:
Graduation from high school, experience with computers, and ability to work with figures and data and work outside; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to work with data and figures and operate a motor vehicle and hand held meter reading device.
