SummaryAbout our opportunity: The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Watershed Technician in the Water Resources department. This role performs skilled work operating heavy equipment in the maintenance of watershed roads and grounds. This position also performs skilled work with small equipment to maintain and repair the watershed facilities and reservoir dam.
What you’ll be doing:
Operates heavy equipment including dump trucks, backhoes, bulldozers, knockleboom loaders, and tractors to maintain grounds, roads and rights-of-way on the watershed properties.
Operates a variety of small machinery including chainsaws, hand and power tools, motors, and lawnmowers to maintain watershed resources and facilities.
Operates small motor boats to observe and patrol lakeshores and remove debris form spillway gates when needed.
Performs pedestrian and vehicle patrols of watershed properties
Performs repairs and preventative maintenance when necessary.
Performs maintenance to all water treatment apparatus and assists the Water Department in emergency repairs or installations.

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered :
High School Diploma or equivalent education with 2 to 3 years of related experience with Heavy equipment and machinery listed.
Possession of a valid and appropriate Commercial Driver's License issued by the state of North Carolina.

Starting rate of Pay for this position is $22.18
A certification in Confined Spaces and Wildland fire suppression issued by the state of North Carolina must be obtained within one year of hire.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Knowledge in the operations of heavy motorized equipment and a variety of small machinery and equipment as they relate to maintenance to and repair of roads, grounds, and rights-of-way.Knowledge of the geographical layout of the City of Asheville's watershed.General knowledge of environmental laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to watershed and forest management.General knowledge of the organization and operation of City government, and of the Water Resources Department.General knowledge of forestry wildlife and management techniques.General knowledge of forest fire suppression tools and techniques.Skill in inspecting watershed site for environmental conditions and concerns.Skill in performing fire inspections.Skill in inspecting dams.Ability to operate motor vehicles, aquatic craft, and heavy machinery.Ability to walk moderate distances across varying terrain.Ability to maintain accurate files and records and compile date from such records.Ability to establish and maintain working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.The City of Asheville is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
