This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV position in the Avery County Maintenance Unit. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces of equipment as needed on the various crews. Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. Must be able to train others in equipment operation as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation, manual tree and brush removal, debris and litter removal, snow plowing, spreading salt and salt brine application. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. These positions respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. These positions are also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices

Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching

Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operation as well as directing the daily activities of awork crew

Experience in snow and ice removal operations

Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper

Additional Expectations:Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing. Must be able to effectively communicate with others. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of the on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed following the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes are required.
