A Transmission Rigger III will assist and safely lead lower level riggers in activities associated with heavy hauling for construction and maintenance. Incumbents are expected to have advanced technical and leadership skills and the ability to work independently and lead medium to large rigging and hauling activities. Capable of serving on committees and resolving advanced technical matters for rigging and hauling activities.Transmission Rigger III performs the following with Minimal Supervision and Increased Latitude for Un-Reviewed Work:

Demonstrate a complete understanding of company safety rules and work practices

Demonstrate a complete understanding of Human Performance Tools and requirements

Exhibits the capacity to safely lead medium to large jobs and work independent of direct leadership

Total understanding for isolation of substation equipment and grounding practices

Total understanding of the processes needed to methodically/logically organize heavy hauling work activities

Total understanding of the processes needed to operate bucket, digger derrick truck, and other aerial devices

Ability to respond to all call outs and weekend work

Total understanding for limitations, never assumes, and will STOP to seek help

Experience leading complex heavy hauling for maintenance or construction projects

Total understanding of the processes needed for the installation of portable/mobile substations/transformers or other temporary equipment

Complete understanding on how to operate heavy duty truck, tractor-trailer combination, oil tankers, or similar automotive equipment used to transport heavy equipment, such as substation transformers, structural steel, circuit breakers, regulators, large poles, and other associated equipment or devices, assist in the loading and unloading of such equipment

Drive heavy duty tractor to move portable substations from one location to another and assist in setting such substation in indicated location

Complete understanding on how to operate cranes, etc. in close proximity to energized lines and substations to place associated equipment in support of emergency response/repair/construction activities

Responsible for developing crane lifting plans for all sizes/types of material/equipment lifts

Complete understanding on how to operate different types and sizes of forklifts and cranes used for the loading, unloading, and movement of equipment and materials to meet job site requirements

Complete understanding with the height, width (over hang), length and weight of the load to be transported and select routes in accordance with traffic condition, taking particular cognizance of overhead obstruction and bridges

Complete understanding with States of North and South Carolina’s over weight, over height, and over width permit requirements and obtaining such permitting

Furnish/maintain record of transformer and equipment transported and other records memoranda, as required

Maintain work equipment and areas in a clean and orderly condition

Total understanding of substation equipment isolation and clearances and grounding practices

Superior understanding of pneumatics and hydraulics systems

Demonstrated ability to pass panel review by meeting or exceeding requirements for step progression

Demonstrated availability for after-hour work and weekend work

Advanced knowledge and skills in the handling, placement and securing heavy loads for transportation

Advanced knowledge with various system locations and the routes available with respect to the clearances and weight requirements

Must be capable of working on elevated work surfaces

Frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat/lift/climb

Drive for extended periods of time

Available for overnight travel

Advanced technical and professional knowledge, skills, and performance, frequently leads others

Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities with internal and external customers

Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Demonstrates coaching and mentoring with crew

Provides high level of leadership and sets a positive example for others to follow

Must pass appropriate level of Duke aptitude test

Ability to lift and carry 75 lbs.

Ability to work in a diverse environment with individuals from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds

Advanced written and oral communication skills

Demonstrated ongoing leadership skills development

Ability to pass any required background check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance

Basic Requirements:

Valid CDL Class A Driver’s License

Four years or more of experience in driving heavy truck, tractor-trailer combinations or equivalent

High School diploma or equivalent and minimum 5 years of Transmission or Distribution substation maintenance or construction experience or equivalent job-related and educational experience

Specific Requirements:

This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.

Must have a permanent residence approximately forty-five minutes from their base location
