This position is responsible for all steam and steam-driven equipment on campus. The system includes boilers (11 currently), generators, fuel systems, chemical treatment systems, 3 campus-wide piping systems for condensate, domestic hot water, and steam, gauges, pumps, blowers, etc. The system encompasses all controls in building mechanical rooms that use steam and hot water. The position also ensures that systems are monitored and inspected constantly and equipment adjusted to avoid malfunctions, and ensures that the equipment is operating within set operation ranges. This work involves quality assurance, valve, pump and pipe repair, gauge calibration, boiler repair and operation, chemical analysis, precision, measuring, system controls, hydrostatic testing, trouble-shooting, and problem solving. This is a key position for Utilities Services and Operations in providing after hours emergency to on-call personnel.Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesThe successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of high pressure steam-generation, condensation and distribution systems and general knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems; ability to operate electronic controls, power tools and hand tools; ability to lift up to 50 pounds, wear a full or half-face respirator, climb a ladder, and crawl in confined spaces; ability to work independently with little or no supervision; to take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion; to learn, interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions; to exercise judgment and discretion in problem solving; to plan, prioritize and organize workflow; ability to work flexible schedules; excellent analytical and organizational skills along with written and oral communication skills. A valid driver’s license is required.Minimum Education/ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
