In carrying out its mission, the SBTDC cooperates with and fully utilizes a broad range of programs and resources in the state but its primary attention is focused on leveraging the management and technical assistance resources of The University’s constituent institutions and other colleges and state supported resources.Primary Purpose of PositionThis individual provides counseling, training, research, and technical assistance services to small and midsize business owners and/or individuals and firms developing or expanding products, technologies, or markets. This person is responsible for one-on-one client counseling and for preparation time, as well as maintenance of confidential client records and program performance. Significant outreach is required within the center’s six-county service area. The counselor will also assist the design and delivery of training programs sponsored by the SBTDC.Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesA broad general knowledge of the principals and practices of small business is required. The employee must have strong computer skills, particularly with regard to word processing, developing spreadsheets, and database management. A demonstrated ability to develop and analyze financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow) is imperative. Employee must have a working knowledge of techniques used in collecting and interpreting market.Preferred – Master’s degree in business or other relevant field with two years of relevant work experience. (65% of work time) The Small Business Specialist I is responsible for client counseling. This responsibility includes direct client contact in one-on-one meetings and through telephone and written communications. It also includes the very substantial time, which must be committed to adequately, research, prepare materials and recommend courses of action to clients who are counseled.Much of the work is technically based and requires attention to detail. The person filling this position must exercise great care and discretion in assisting the SBTDC’s clients. Absolute confidentiality of client information must be preserved.Both the SBTDC and its clients will be directly affected by the quality of service provided through this position. Errors or the failure to exercise care in advising clients could cause irreparable harm.Function Program ManagementDescribe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.The person filling this position will have responsibilities for promoting the SBTDC throughout the multi-county area served by that center.
