Description of WorkPENDING OSHR APPROVALThis position will report to the Traffic Services Sign Supervisor in Division 10. The worker is at the Intermediate level generalist, serving as a sign erector, installing and maintaining signs, sign posts, delineators, and hardware. Employee will be subject to be on-call for many types of traffic related emergencies after regular hours. Employees will operate a medium duty truck as well as a variety of hand and power tools. This position will perform work in Mecklenburg County. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesApplicants must submit an application that CLEARLY reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

Experience in the installation of roadway signs

Experience operating a sign truck with attachments

Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures

Knowledge of sign design, layout, and fabrication

Knowledge of maintaining the Sign Inventory

Additional Expectations: Applicant must function under a variety of weather conditions and must have the ability to lift signs and operate truck. Applicant shall be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform assigned tasks. Applicant shall be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Applicant shall comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safe work environment. Worker shall possess ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signs and other traffic control devices. Worker shall possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include, but not limited to, extreme cold and hot outside conditions. Workers shall possess the ability to work under conditions of exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy constructions. Safety toe shoes are required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and Post offer employment evaluation.
