Caregiver and Advocate with Heart (Pittsboro, NC)

Vacancy expired!

Our 30 year old son suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of a near fatal car accident in Chapel Hill in May 2007. He was voted the "most memorable" in his high school graduating class. After years of acute rehab and medical treatment in various cities on the Eastern seaboard (Atlanta, West Orange, NJ and NYC) he returned to Chapel Hill in 2010 to live at home until March 2014 when he entered a nursing home in Pittsboro.

We seek a reliable caregiver to work with our son as an advocate and personal care giver, at the nursing home. We will accept applications from all students from healthcare disciplines, and other qualified applicants. CNA education, allied health care education, experience as a care giver and knowledge of brain injury are pluses.

In this position you will work with our son to assist him while eating, and accompany him to activities and medical appointments where family will also attend. You will engage in advocacy with nursing home staff to ensure patient safety, hygiene and comfort. You will learn application of AFOs and/or splints, help with skin care (sun screen and hygiene and moisturizing), administer an oral care regimen for preservation of dentition, engage in memory exercises, speech and breathing exercises, physical therapy exercises. You will also provide environmental stimulation through activities in which you and he engage which are outlined for you in his care plan. You will not administer the direct physical care required of nursing home staff. There will be opportunities to take our son on local outings.

Personal qualities desired in the caregiver: congenial and communicative, desire to develop a fully engaged relationship with our son, willingness to implement the personal care plan as requested by the family, ability to work to a schedule while still remaining flexible, verbally engaging and good listener, sense of humor, tenacity, skills in developing good communication with nursing home staff, and punctuality. Interest in music is a plus, as our son was in an indy band prior to the accident. Family is very involved in care; a team player is needed.

We're looking for someone with a fresh outlook, a positive and engaging personality, and integrity. Hours are 11am-7pm every other Saturday and Sunday, and several weekday day shifts per week can be assumed as well. Position is available now. If you feel a passion to personally improve the quality of a young man's life, we would love to have you join our team. We guarantee we will give you our full support and be available as needed for questions, and ongoing training issues.

Training would begin immediately, once hired. Compensation: $14.00 per hour, and once you're acclimated, $15.00 per hour. Bonuses for merit performance available.
