Full-time DAY position, 6:30AM to 3:00PM. Every other or every third weekend and every other holiday.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. This position is responsible for assessing, planning, and implementing resident care within established policies and procedures; Professional Standards of Nursing Care; Federal and State Laws, Rules and Regulations; SMP Directives with consideration and respect for residents' choices, privacy, dignity and independence. This includes making regular rounds and assessing residents' physical and psychosocial conditions; assessing findings and planning residents' care; observing the interaction of staff and residents, communicating with co-workers; recording pertinent information into the clinical record; making provisions for residents to see their physicians outside the facility or accompanying physicians in making rounds in the facility; notifying family members, physicians, the Nursing Services Administrator and other appropriate individuals when there are changes in the residents' physical or psychosocial conditions; and cooperating with the interdisciplinary team members and others in carrying out these responsibilities.
2. The Nurse is responsible for ordering, preparing, administering and documenting routine and emergency medication and treatments according to physicians' orders and established policies and procedures; maintaining accurate records of medications/treatments; checking, verifying and recording all incoming medications; and notifying and explaining medication and treatment changes to residents and their families.
3. This position is responsible for completing residents' clinical records and various facility forms. The Nurse is responsible for transcribing physician orders according to policies and procedures along with daily reviewing of resident records for thoroughness and accuracy.
4. The Nurse is responsible for directly supervising, observing, guiding, coaching, and performance counseling by giving verbal warnings for infractions or misconduct and recommending corrective/disciplinary action; evaluating, and suspending upon suspicion of resident abuse CNAs, Bathing Assistants, and Mealtime Assistants with assistance of Nurse Managers in a prompt and professional manner; and adjusting the CNA assignments when needed based on the needs of residents and classification of staff.
5. Functions as the Nurse in Charge. The Nurse in Charge promptly, professionally and accurately follows indicated policies and procedures for immediately handling of severe weather, fire/fire drills, missing residents, etc., evaluates staffing needs and replaces staff as necessary; approves/disapproves overtime according to the current financial status of SMP Health - Ave Maria in order to provide a sufficient number of nursing staff to provide optimal care; settles disputes involving residents, nursing staff, families, and/or visitors that are not settled by intervention by the neighborhood nurse; becomes the resource nurse for other nurses on the same tour of duty; observes, encourages, coaches, directs and verbalizes with CNAs working in the facility during his/her tour of duty; initiates CNA disciplinary action as indicated; handles all risk management issues, except those which are classified as emergencies and then proceeds to notify an administrative nurse by telephone and any other administrative task delegated to him/her.
The incumbent completes the following legally designated licensed nurse job tasks: supervising all Graduate/Student Nurses and CMAs; assisting in attaining the goals of all resident Plans of Care; working tour of duty as scheduled; performing CPR, AIMS testing, and/or Medication Review if so designated. Being responsible for the clinical practice and performance of administrative procedures performed by the Licensed Practical Nurses (RN only).
Performs safety and infection control policies and procedures to ensure a safe, organized and lean environment. This includes utilizing the proper hand washing technique at all times, maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the nursing stations, answering call lights and bed/chair checks and other alarm systems, and understanding and followingSMP Health - Ave Maria policies and procedures relating to emergencies, wandering residents, fire, severe weather, evacuation, universal precautions, infection control procedures, sanitation procedures, and safe operation of any equipment used.
Attends and actively participates in work, meetings and in-services in order to be current, knowledgeable and able to contribute to the residents' highest level of functioning; serves on various committees and task forces within the facility, especially the Medication Review, Nutritional at Risk and Restraint Alternative committees; participates in quality improvement studies as directed by Nursing Services Administration; and thoroughly and accurately orientates newly-hired nurses.
