General Statement of DutiesUnder the direction of senior maintenance personnel, this employee actively participates in the work of a group responsible for the fabrication, maintenance, and repair of a broad variety of specialized vehicular mounted and wastewater collection system mechanical equipment as well as facility maintenance activities and wastewater bypass pumping operations. Performs related duties as required.Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)(Illustrative only. Any one position may not require all of the listed KSAs nor do the listed examples include all the KSAs which may be required.)Knowledge of:Basic design, operation, rehabilitation, and maintenance principles of a wastewater collection system.Handbooks, manuals, and code books relating to shop work and wastewater collection system operations.Parts and purposes of standard machine tools (engine lathe, milling machine, radial drill, etc.)SAE, Acme, and standard pitches and diameters of pipes and bolts.Hydraulic systems, Plumbing, and HVAC systems.Safety policies and procedures, e.g., Employee Safety Instruction Manual and applicable agency requirements.Skill to:Properly use hand tools, power tools' and other maintenance equipment.Operate appropriate computer equipment; use properly all related hardware and software.Operate assigned vehicle in the course of duty.Ability to:Read blueprints and make simple sketches of parts.Read and interpret shop manuals, construction prints, wiring drawings, and/or schematics.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Develop, document, and apply standard operating procedures and processes in the performance of job duties.Perform strenuous physical labor including climbing, pulling, pushing and bending, as well as lifting and carrying heavy loads in accordance with appropriate job hazard analyses.Represent the Department in a courteous, professional, and helpful manner to its customers.Foster a cooperative, positive, and productive work environment that promotes crew member development and personal initiative.Required Education and ExperienceOpen: Each applicant must have two years of hands-on experience in a job in a mechanical maintenance field OR must have successfully completed a high school vocational program or college-level technical program in a mechanical maintenance field. OTHER REQUIREMENTSMust possess or obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License during the probationary period.Must possess or obtain certification to operate mobile crane equipment consistent with current OSHA standards and rules during the probationary period. Must possess or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within the probationary period to access sewer facilities within Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA)-regulated ports.Must be able to work irregular hours and be on call 24 hours a day for emergency maintenance situations.Must be able to work in OSHA defined confined spaces including actively flowing sanitary sewer appurtenances.Must be able to work at heights.Some positions may require physical certification for work utilizing Supplied Breathing Apparatus (SBA) and air purifying respirators. Any one position within this classification may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all of the tasks which may be performed.)Participates in the fabrication, assembly and maintenance of highly specialized equipment used in the maintenance of the Metropolitan Sewer District's wastewater collection system.Participates in bypass pumping operations in support of wastewater collection system operations.Participates in building facility maintenance activities.Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical problems with existing equipment and facilities.Operates and sets up maintenance shop equipment such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, drill presses, grinders, etc.Reads shop drawings and prepares basic mechanical sketches.Participates in completing routine repairs of machine shop equipment.Uses precision instruments such as vibration analyzers, alignment tools, micrometers, and calipers.Uses a variety of hand tools, power tools, and other maintenance equipment.Under the direction of senior shop personnel, cuts, shapes, brazes, welds, and paints parts and mechanical assemblies.Fabricates specialized jigs for shop work.Loads and unloads equipment using motorized lifts, pallets, movers, forklifts, and one's own abilityUses a personal computer for data entry on shop work orders and storeroom requisitions.Enters and works in OSHA defined confined spaces including actively flowing sanitary sewer appurtenances.Interacts with non-city personnel, such as vendors, sales reps, contractors, suppliers, etc.Completes various forms such as work orders, requisitions, etc.Exam DetailsThe examination process is worth 100% of the examination grade. Qualified applicants will be notified at least 14 calendar days prior to the promotional exam date. Seniority points will be added to the passing scores. The passing score will be determined after the examination by the Civil Service Examiner together with the Civil Service Secretary. Determination of passing score will be based on the job analysis and the examination results in conjunction with subject matter experts (Special Examiners) and/or professional methods.Additional Exam Information:Credit for Military Service: Special credit for honorable military service is given (1) only to Ohio residents, (2) who successfully complete all portions of the testing process, and (3) who provide Human Resources a long-form copy of your DD-214 confirming an honorable discharge (Character of Service Box 24 on DD-214). Disabled veterans shall receive ten preference points and non-disabled veterans shall receive five preference points.
