Job Summary:
Work as a member of a crew to install new railroad track & maintain existing tracks.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities:
Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal
Railroad Administration (FRA)
Participate in group discussions, safety meetings, job briefings, or process reviews.
Remove and replace track & switch components (e.g. ties, rails, bars, frogs, switch points etc.)
Slide/align tie plates, hand set and drive railroad spikes etc.
Drill holes through rails for insertion of bolts and hand tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold
ends or rails together
Handle Creosote Treated Crossties & Switch Ties
Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge
Adjust, lift and roll heavy rails
Sort various track material for loading/unloading.
Install and repair street and railroad crossings
Cut brush and vegetation from the right-of-way
Aid in loading and unloading of various railroad track equipment.
Hand excavation and grading (dressing tracks) clean-up of project sites.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma/GED preferred.
Reliable, independent, Transportation to and from various job sites.
18 years of age or older
Valid Driver's License or State ID
Preferred Qualifications:
Outside work experience (e.g. construction, heavy equipment operation, farming, landscaping)
Basic Competencies:
Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communicationsboth general and technical)
Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
Basic Math
Physical Requirements:
Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an regular basis
Exposure to moving heavy construction equipment & trains on an regular basis
Employment Conditions:
Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
Wear protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses
Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, possible overtime, and weekend work if needed.
Pre- Employment testing for drugs and/or alcohol
Travel may be required.
Environmental Conditions:
Work outside in all weather conditions and on occasion at elevated heights.
