The sexton is responsible for the upkeep, cleanliness, and minor maintenance of church buildings and grounds, ensuring they are prepared for services, events, and meetings. This role requires attention to detail, physical capability, and a cooperative attitude to support the church’s mission.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, able to work with minimal supervision, and possess strong organizational and hospitality skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Cleaning and Maintenance: Perform regular cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning windows and maintaining restrooms, meeting rooms, worship spaces, and common areas. Ensure the sanctuary and parish hall are ready for services. Safely handle cleaning chemicals, solvents, and waste materials.

Event Setup and Breakdown: Arrange furniture and equipment for weekly food pantry, services, meetings, and special events (e.g., receptions, weddings, or funerals) and restore spaces afterward.

Food Pantry: Assist in unloading and stocking pantry food items delivered to church. Drive, load and unload church truck for food pick up and recycling of cardboard.

Groundskeeping: Maintain exterior areas, including landscaping, sidewalk cleaning, snow removal from entrances and walkways. Spread ice melting chemicals as needed. trash management. Excludes cutting and fertilizing grass. Excludes garden.

Work in various environments: including offices, children’s area, and other church facilities, with occasional outdoor tasks in inclement weather.

Minor Repairs: Conduct basic maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, minor plumbing or electrical fixes, and painting. Larger issues are to be reported to parish administrator or rector. Maintain custodial equipment in good working order.

Supply Management: Order and stock supplies like paper towels, toilet paper, soap, and cleaning materials working with parish administrator.

Security and Safety: Monitor facilities for safety hazards. Ensure a safe environment for staff, members, and visitors, including children and the elderly.

Liaison Duties: Coordinate with vendors for maintenance projects, pest control, or equipment servicing.

Additional Tasks: Assist with special projects, such as seasonal decorations and perform other duties as assigned by the church administrator or rector.

Qualifications:

Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for staff, clergy, parishioners and visitors.

Willingness to complete background checks and, in some cases, Safe Church training (per Episcopal Diocese requirements).

Previous janitorial and maintenance experience is preferred.

Handyman skills a plus.

High school graduate or GED preferred.

Current driver’s license.

Must have reliable transportation.

Work Schedule:

Permanent part-time (20 hours/week). Sunday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday through Thursday 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. May require working evenings or weekends for special events.

Reporting Structure:

Reports to the rector (priest).

Work Environment:

Works in an Episcopal church setting, contributing to a welcoming and sacred space. The role involves interaction with clergy, staff, volunteers, parish members and Walnut Hills community members.
