The OpportunityThis position works out of our Columbus, OH location in the Nutrition Division .In Research & Development (R&D) our ambition is to provide innovative high-quality products, creating sustainable value, delivering superior user experience, and enhancing health outcomes at all stages of life.What You’ll Work OnPrimary Job Function

Serve as a scientific leader in development, validation, transfer, and maintenance of analytical methods in protein and food chemistry for testing of products and ingredients. Methods facilitate understanding of physical characteristics of Abbott Nutrition products such as emulsion stability, protein stability, powder solubility, and shelf-life stability, to name a few.

Conceives, plans, designs, conducts, or applies advanced research/scientific direction/scientific leadership in increasing complexity. May establish research strategy.

Lead identification and evaluation of new technologies in the space and development of predictive models for shelf-life physical stability using data generated or at hand.

Work very closely with Product Development and Engineering groups to support product development, scale-up, and troubleshooting.

Core Job Responsibilities

Act as lead scientist, project leader, or project contributor. Provides scientific and technical direction and feedback. Provides consultation to others on technical issues. Interacts with other groups and shares information. May supervise technical personnel.

Scientific partner to drive business strategy. Translate strategic needs of the division into executable programs and projects. Develops expertise in strategic areas and contributes to the generation of new product ideas consistent with division strategy.

Design, conduct and lead advanced independent or multidisciplinary research driven by strategic business needs. Responsible for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of experimental results. Produce reports and other documents of increasing complexity. Analyze results from multiple experiments, formulate conclusions and design future experiments.

Scientific Consultation: Provide consultation to other scientists and business units on technical issues; Provide top line review of experimental results to large and diverse groups both internally and externally.

May conduct routine testing of commercial and research samples.

Accountability

Strategy: Project goals are broadly defined; defines project milestones; responsible for timely project completion. Designs experiments and documentation independently.

Quality of Work: Responsible for documentation and for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of experimental results.

Read, understand, and comply with all applicable Division, area, and group-specific safety and employee health procedures. Comply with all applicable quality procedures.

Work Performance: Successfully summarizes data and analyzes results; formulates conclusions and determines future experiments. Actively participates in routine maintenance, lab safety, GMP implementation as appropriate. Based on area, may assume training role.

Complete documentation of experiments in laboratory notebook. Primary contribution to project reports summarizing results, conclusion, and recommendations as appropriate. Regularly communicate project status to management. Provide managers with periodic reports summarizing activities and progress within area of responsibility.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, YOU’LL BRINGRequired:

Ph.D. in a scientific related field

3+ years’ experience in research or industry laboratory.

BS/MS in a scientific related field with 16+ years’ experience in research or industry laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with separation science (LC and CE), food science, protein chemistry, emulsions, and design of experiments (DOE) are required. Experience with milk-based systems and both liquid and spray drying formulations is required.
