DefinitionUnder general supervision, is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and fabrication of overhead and underground traffic signal cable, equipment, and overhead traffic signs; performs related duties as required.Examples of Work(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains overhead and underground electric power lines for traffic signals and lighted freeway signs;
Fabricates, installs, and maintains traffic signals, school flashers, hanging signs, and crosswalk signs;
Installs, wires, troubleshoots, and maintains traffic control cabinets, lighted signals, detectors, flasher signals, etc.; traffic signals, traffic detectors, and pedestrian signals;
Wires, troubleshoots, installs, and repairs high voltage transformers, fuses, ballast's, lighted freeway lane controls, and information signs;
Operates various electronic equipment including voltmeter, ammeter, ohmmeter, continuity checker, cable locator, and megger to detect broken circuits and faulty equipment;
Installs and/or works with technicians to install overhead and underground interconnect cables such as coax, fiber optic, RG-9, and RG-59 for computer modems, micro processors, traffic control systems, and/or video monitoring cameras;
Trims trees in order to protect signal equipment or improve visibility;
Builds foundation reinforcement cages and mixes and pours concrete for the installation of traffic poles and control equipment;
Operates power augers, front-end loaders, backhoes, air hammers, concrete saws, trenching equipment, and other power equipment as needed;
Drives and operates bucket and dump trucks as needed;
Paints newly installed traffic control devices and maintains existing traffic control devices including wiring, painting, etc.;
Sets up and maintains traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barrels in order to provide a safe work area.
Minimum QualificationsThree (3) years of experience in any phase of electrical work. Substitution(s): Two (2) years of formal classroom training in electricity or electronics may be substituted for two (2) years of experience on a year-for-year basis.Possession of a valid Class A commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing the operation of a vehicle with air brakes.Test/Job Contact InformationThe names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create aNEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list, and willreplacethe names on the current list. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
