Purpose:

The Camp Director is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating all

educational and recreational components of DYS Hot Shots camps and various other programs

that fulfill the DYS mission. The Camp Director will work closely with our families and children to introduce them to the organization, make them feel comfortable in our community, connect

them with peer mentors, and provide programming that helps the family manage both the

emotional and physical demands of diabetes.

Specific Responsibilities:

 Plan and implement summer programming for two (2) resident camps and two (2) day

camps. Overseeing resident camp requires residence on-site for the length of both

camps, approximately 8-10 days in June (or alternate summer dates TBD by Camp

Director).

 Hire, train, and oversee all camp staff (counselors, medical, dietary, and volunteers)

including coordinating background and reference checks.

 Lead monthly camp planning meetings.

 Work within an established budget to plan activities, purchase supplies, coordinate

guest speakers and education sessions for all camps.

 Arrange transportation for campers to and from resident camp sessions.

 Work with families to register for camp, complete paperwork and scholarship

applications, and manage payment plans.

 Create opportunities for accessibility to Hot Shots Camping programs, including

awarding scholarships, transportation, and housing.

 Work with corporate partners and vendors to schedule display opportunities at camp

check-in or check-out.

 Attend an annual out-of-state conference relating to camp (ACA and DECA National

Conference).

 Plan, hire, and implement programming for one Teen Leadership Retreat and one Family

Retreat during the fall/winter months.

 Prepare and analyze program and service reports and other reporting as necessary.

 Evaluate camps and programs and suggest/implement changes.

 Provide program reports and program statistics for grant proposals and maintain

connections with grant contacts as requested.

 Assist with marketing efforts, updating the DYS we bsite, community outreach, and

education.

 Support and participate in other aspects of office operations such as: school support,

fundraising events, creation of marketing materials, general clerical work, strategic

planning, and other needs as requested by the Executive Director.

Mandatory Qualifications:

 An annual background check will be required.

 At least three years of experience working with children and young adults.

 Proven customer service skills.

 Strong planning and organizational skills.

 Strong time management skills, ability to multitask.

 Strong written and oral communication skills.

 Project management skills are necessary to efficiently plan activities within policies and

procedures, maintain positive working relationships, demonstrate initiative, and be

accountable for outcomes.

 Flexible and adaptable schedule, including ability to work occasional weekends and

nights as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

 Bachelor’s Degree –Community Health, Education, Nonprofit Management, Recreation

Management or comparable experience.

 Knowledge of Type 1 Diabetes management and care, or willingness to learn.

 Desire to put families and children at the forefront of everything we do.

 Strong public speaking skills.

 Ability to travel within the DYS service area (northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan).

 Accessible for meetings before and after normal work hours as necessary.

 Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Willingness to learn database

software (CampWise or Bloomerang)

 Marketing experience, including printed flyers, press releases, social media posts and

verbal/email invitations.

 Other duties as required.
