Job Description

Position purpose

Set up and operate Mills, Lathe, and all-metal cutting machining used to produce precision parts and instruments. An asset in the training process for mill, lather, and other metal cutting operators. Develop and manage CNC programs used to control machining of parts on automatic machine tools, select fixturing and tooling, provide support to the program managers in the quoting process, oversee the quality and productivity of the machinists, and operate machines as needed for complex and one-off jobs or to cover vacations and absentees.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Requires knowledge of computers and electronics, computer numerical control, basics of programming, and computer-aided manufacturing.
  • Requires knowledge of manual machining process
  • Support the Tooling – Setup Supervisor / Manager in the following Tasks
  • Review all new jobs including defining in-process steps and tolerances;create / review, manage, and implement CNC programs; fixture design/selection
  • Provide required information to the Project Managers for the quoting process including the recommended Process Flow; machining time; and required tooling and fixturing required (If we do not have any existing)
  • Analyzes drawings, sketches, and design data of part to determine dimension and configuration of cuts, selection of cutting tools, and machine speeds and feed rates, according to the knowledge of machine shop processes, part specifications, and machine capabilities.
  • Determines reference points and direction of machine cutting paths.
  • Computes angular and linear dimensions, radii, and curvatures, and outlines the sequence of operations required to machine the part.
  • Writes instruction sheets and cutter lists to guide setup and operation of the machine.
  • Writes program of machine instructions to regulate the movement of machine along cutting path.
  • Compares computer printout with the original program sheet to assure the accuracy of machine instructions.
  • Revises program to eliminate instruction errors or omissions.
  • Observes operation of a machine on trial run to prove programmed instructions.
  • Fills out quality and inspection paperwork

Qualifications

Education and Training, or Experience equivalent:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Five years’ experience in ­­­­­­operating CNC Mills/Lathes and blueprint reading a plus
  • Two years of experience setting up new jobs that included programming, tool selection, fixturing, and defining in-process tolerances required to assure the final part is within tolerance

Skills and Abilities:

  • The physical strength and ability to properly handle tooling and to safely set up large workpieces.
  • Own tools of the trade, and the ability to use them effectively.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes and forklift
  • Ability to meet production requirements as specified
  • Applying knowledge of metal properties and shop mathematics, as well as with an understanding of geometric tolerance and dimensioning
  • Ability to work with engineers and inspectors to produce quality parts to customers’ specifications.
  • Strong math aptitude is required
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments (calipers, mics, & other gauges)
  • The ability to use a feed & speed chart or a calculator to determine
  • Understanding of metal properties and appropriate cutting tools, appropriate feeds, speeds, and depth of cuts
  • Ability to program and operate CNC controls
  • Ability to machine parts to specific tolerances
  • Ability to used CAD/CAM software

Other Qualifications

  • Ability to verbally communicate with team members, supervisors and Engineers.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Able to work with coolant, solvents and greas
