Plant Nursery Assistant Manager

Schilling’s Garden Market is a destination property that offers a truly memorable shopping experience, from the unique plants in our nursery to the curated wares in our farm stand. We are located on the Old Bend Redmond Highway, tucked into the Central Oregon landscape. As a family owned and oriented retail garden market, our nursery specializes in hardy perennials, trees, and shrubs for the High Desert region.

We are in search of an experienced individual to fill the Assistant Nursery Manager position. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership skills, knowledge of landscape plants and their care, competence in greenhouse management, and a passion for outdoor work. You should have exceptional customer service skills and a desire to create a welcoming environment for our guests. The ability to problem-solve and work both independently and as a team is crucial. Creating and maintaining positive workplace relationships is important for this role. If you’re good-natured, motivated, and dependable, this job could be for you!

This is a full-time, year-round position with consistent hours available February through December.

Responsibilities:

Work closely with the Nursery Manager to develop strategies for team growth and productivity.

Lead, train, and supervise the nursery team, while providing support and a positive work environment.

Participate in all aspects of nursery operations, including plant care, greenhouses, irrigation, IPM plan, inventory management, and product display.

Train and mentor staff to deliver knowledgeable customer service and a welcoming atmosphere.

Regularly collaborate with the Nursery Manager to maintain a diverse and high-quality inventory of plants and garden supplies. Participate in plant and supply ordering as needed.

Uphold company standards for cleanliness, organization, attire, and safety on the property

Utilize Kubota and Bobcat.

Adequately fill the role of Manager on Duty when Nursery Manager is not present. (following appropriate training and comprehension of expectations).

Problem-solve issues related to employees, customer concerns, technology, or otherwise.

Awareness of and plan for upcoming plant deliveries, coordinate the unloading and staging of plants prior to being displayed.

Inform Nursery Manager of and assist in property maintenance and other on-site projects, as needed.

Create staff schedules and manage time off requests and schedule changes.

Requirements:  

Proven experience in a leadership role within a garden center or similar environment.

Thorough experience working in hospitality and/or retail customer service.

Confident operation of POS systems and general payment processing.

Must have knowledge of common plants, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, etc. Plus: Experience is based in Central Oregon or similar environments.

Ability to motivate, mentor, and manage a team effectively and efficiently.

Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Dependable, self-motivated, and able to thrive in a dynamic, outdoor work environment.

Ability to multitask and take individual initiative.

Ability to maintain task continuity despite interruptions.

Must be able to lift 50+ pounds on a regular basis and push/pull 200lbs on castors.

Ability to work weekends, special events, and overtime, as needed.

Must have ability to operate equipment safely.

Must have ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.

Willingness to work in greenhouses and outdoors, in all seasonal temperatures and conditions.

Proficient in computer use, Microsoft Office suite, etc.

Plus: Familiarity with the operation of irrigation controllers.

Plus: Experience managing or implementing an IPM program.

Compensation: $20.00 - $24.00/hour (dependent on experience)
