Schilling’s Garden Market is a destination property that offers a truly memorable shopping experience, from the unique plants in our nursery to the curated wares in our farm stand. We are located on the Old Bend Redmond Highway, tucked into the Central Oregon landscape. As a family owned and oriented retail garden market, our nursery specializes in hardy perennials, trees, and shrubs for the High Desert region.
We are seeking individuals who are experienced with outdoor plants, greenhouse work, and retail sales. If you have a penchant for customer service and love working outside, this position could be for you! The available positions are seasonal, with consistent hours available from February through December. We are currently looking for team members for our 2024 season, but please let us know if you are interested in beginning work sooner. We are happy to accommodate early hiring for the right candidate!
Responsibilities:
Perform plant care tasks including but not limited to repotting, planting, fertilizing, weeding, pruning, cleaning, watering, covering during freezing temperatures and irrigating.
Perform sales activities and retail tasks including but not limited to greeting customers, answering questions, restocking merchandise, answering phones, operating a POS system, and completing sales transactions.
Provide routine maintenance of greenhouse buildings such as cleaning, organizing, and restocking.
Assist in monitoring and maintaining greenhouse systems, such as humidity control, pest management, and irrigation systems under direction of supervisors.
Assist with general landscape work to maintain grounds around the nursery property.
Provide routine upkeep of retail areas under the direction of supervisors. Tasks may include sweeping, dusting, organizing merchandise and sales displays, and maintaining gravel walkways.
Unload deliveries of small plants to large trees from semi-trucks by hand and/or with nursery equipment.
Assist with daily care of on-site animals (poultry and livestock). Tasks may include but are not limited to cleaning pens/stables, feeding, watering, unloading hay, and assisting in medical procedures.
Develop product knowledge by engaging with vendor tags, pamphlets, personal research, and relevant employee training literature to communicate information to customers.
Responsible for independently performing nursery duties, with proper training.
Requirements:
Hand-eye coordination and the ability to operate hand tools, horticulture equipment, and machinery.
A basic understanding of outdoor plant cultivation (plus if your experience is based in Central Oregon).
Familiarity with operation of POS systems and general payment processing.
A basic understanding of sales principles and customer service practices.
Ability to work as a part of a team, be flexible, multitask, and take initiative.
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
Must be capable of operating equipment safely.
Must be capable of lifting 50+ pounds on a regular basis.
Willingness to work in greenhouses and outdoors, in all seasonal temperatures and conditions from February through December.
Must be available to work weekends and special events.
Compensation: $16.00 - $20.00/hour (dependent on experience)
