Job Summary:The Certified Nurse Assistant works as a member of the nursing team under the direct and indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse. The CAN assists in the provision of basic patient care as dictated by comfort and safety and in accordance with identified training and certification.Essential Responsibilities:Professional Behavior Standards of Performance Criteria

Complies with shift, unit, hospital and organizational policies and procedures, protocols and standards.

Follows dress code policy.

Performs tasks in accordance with scope of duties and maintains competencies in accordance with hospital requirements.

Obtains and maintains employment requirement standards and appropriate certifications.

Maintains CPR in current status.

Maintains confidentiality of all patient and organization records and information.

Takes responsibility to keep informed of organizational policies and current information in communication books and policy and procedure manuals.

Complies with contractual responsibility related to work schedules

Follows policies and procedures for use of time, including absenteeism and tardiness.

Monitors and takes corrective action to prevent recurring absences.

Leaves and returns promptly from breaks and lunch and schedules then in collaboration with the Charge RN or Supervising RN to provide appropriate coverage. Signs time out and when back on the board.

Notifies the Charge or Supervising RN whenever leaving the unit for an assigned task and signs time out and erases time when returned.

Arrives on time and is ready to work at start of shift.

Obtains assignments from charge nurse/Supervising RN and reports to the RN the stat us of assignments at regular intervals during shift.

Notifies Charge RN/Supervising RN and reports to the RN the status of assignments at regular intervals during shift.

Notifies Charge RN/Supervising RN of inability to complete assignment by the end of the shift.

Restricts personal business to non-patient care areas and only during scheduled break or lunch times.

Maintains current knowledge and skill base

Attends mandatory in-services related to basic patient care, and others as appropriate.

Obtains and demonstrates through education, training and experience the skills and knowledge needed to provide age appropriate care to patients and families.

Attends and participates in staff meetings.

Participates in unit orientation of new personnel.

Demonstrates quality of service behavioral standards and guidelines

Functions as a team member.

Contributes to performance evaluations for self, peers

Accepts accountability for his/her actions.

Wears name tag and verbally identifies self by name, title, and/or department.

Communicates patient care information so that standards of care are maintained.

Communicates with patient, family and other staff in professional, respectful and courteous manner.

Provide assistance to members or connects member with appropriate person as needed.

Safe Practice Standard of Performance

Maintains safety in use of all equipment.

Operates and maintains equipment according to manufacturers instructions and hospital policy.

Reports need for repair, removes and tags defective equipment and initiates repair request according to policy and procedure.

Complies with all hospital safety policies and procedures.

Identifies patients by checking identification band prior to performing duties.

Handles all hazardous waste in compliance with HazCom regulations.

Handles all infectious waste in compliance with Infection Control standards.

Performs appropriate role during Code 99, Code Red and/or disaster.

Complies with Employee Health policies and procedures.

Delivers all services in a manner which promotes patient comfort and safety.

Assists patient(s) and team members in safely lifting, transferring, turning, positioning ambulating and transporting.

Assists in the application of safety devices as assigned by the RN.

Delivers patient care according to policies and procedures.

Technical Practice Standard of Performance

Provides or assists with care measures for patient in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

Performs delegated tasks as defines in the CAN Scope of Duties:

Demonstrates skills that support activities of daily living.

Accurately measures and records vital signs and reports abnormal findings immediately to the supervising RN.

Administers routine treatments per policy and procedures.

Collects and transports specimens when necessary.

Documents completion of delegated tasks on designated chart forms.

Reports completion of delegated tasks and results to supervising RN.

Reports and observed change of patient condition to supervising RN.

Maintains safe, clean and comfortable environment for patients.

Demonstrates competence in appropriate use of time and resources.

Completes tasks in an efficient and timely manner as assigned.

Collaborates with supervising RN to prioritize tasks according to situation and total assignment.

Remains adaptable to changes in the work environment and related assignments.

Performs other duties as assigned.

EducationMust have completed a basic nursing assistant training program approved by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.

License, Certification, RegistrationNursing Assistant Certificate - Level 1 (Oregon) OR Nursing Assistant Certificate (Washington)

Lifting and carrying:

Able to lift and carry at least 40 pounds.

May assist in the movement of patients and/or equipment whose weight may range form 100-300 pounds.

Bending: able to bend up to 60 times per shift, at both the waist and knees.

Walking: able to stand and/or walk for entire shift. Able to walk a distance of three to five miles during course of a shift.

Able to push/pull weights 100 to 300 pounds with assistance.

Standing: able to stand six to eight hours per shift.

Note: Employees are required to follow all prescribed safety precautions and procedures in order to avoid accidents or exposure to illness.
