Organic Farm Mechanic Assistant

Gathering Together Farm in Philomath, Oregon, is seeking a full-time farm mechanic to help support our maintenance, repair, and fabrication needs. With the direction of the farm’s Lead Mechanic, the Farm Mechanic Assistant will diagnose and service a wide range of vehicles and farm equipment.

Start date will be April 2024

Responsibilities:

Cooperate with and take direction from our senior farm mechanic, who will be your supervisor and advisor.

Help proactively maintain a fleet of diesel distribution trucks; numerous older gas engine vehicles; dump trucks; a compost loader; several tractors of varied ages and engine types; a wide assortment of three-point mounted tractor implements; two forklifts; and other farm machines and tools.

Source parts and materials as necessary for repairs, both from nearby stores and locations further away.

Other maintenance-related jobs for a diversified farm – including building projects, cooling systems maintenance, and other areas of responsibilities.

Opportunity to manage compost production on the farm. However, this could be a job for another person, too.

Qualifications:

Broad experience maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing engines (gas and diesel), farm equipment, and buildings.

Curiosity for learning, and drive to increase competencies beyond current level.

Prior experience maintaining a safe shop space, and practicing good safety habits.

Valid driver’s license and a good driving record, and reliable transportation to and from the farm.

Ability to occasionally work long days, as needed, and willing to work in varying outdoor temperatures and weather.

Preferred Experience:

Experience operating tractors and other farm equipment is ideal, but not required.

Welding experience valued, but not required.

Electrical experience valued, but not required.

Passion for organic farming and organic produce is ideal, but not required.

Competency Qualifications:

Attention to detail.

Willingness to listen to your supervisor and to the farm’s management.

Physical Demands:

Regularly required to sit, stand, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, climb and push, pull, or lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Requires manual dexterity, and the ability to learn farm and shop conventions and standards.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work:

Full time, year round position (TBD in discussion at end of year).

30 - 55 hours (TBD) per week with 5-day work week, generally – Monday through Friday.
