Harvest Laboratory Intern
This is an exciting opportunity to work at one of Oregon’s earliest winemaking pioneers, Silvan Ridge, producing a wide range of white and red wines. The Harvest Laboratory Intern is responsible for the efficient and professional execution of laboratory operations relating to the production of Silvan Ridge wines during the harvest, while promoting a team-oriented environment within the department and company. The ideal candidate will be able to work 40-60 hours a week. An interest in wine production and previous experience is desired but not required. The internship will last approximately early September through mid-November, depending on the harvest season. We are looking for a self-starter and problem solver who can work in a fast-paced environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
LABORATORY OPERATIONS:
QUALITY CONTROL: Works with laboratory staff for accuracy of laboratory data generated at the winery, by maintaining reagents, calibrations of equipment, training and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
DAILY LABORATORY ANALYSIS: Performs the following chemical analyses as needed: total acidity (TA), pH, enzymatic tests for YAN (yeast assimilable nitrogen).
HARVEST ANALYSIS: Works on the analysis of field samples and incoming fruit or juice including Brix, pH, TA, and YAN. Checks brix, pH, and TA, Temp in deg F, on alcoholic fermentations.
SAMPLING: Collecting barrel or tank samples for analysis and/or tasting.
ADDITIONS: Adding a variety of yeast, nutrients, enzymes, etc. to the must or juice.
RECORD KEEPING: Record analysis manually and digitally. Must be able to learn and use interactive data entry software.
SAFETY: Maintains a high level of safety awareness with all staff through ongoing meetings and training. Responsible for adherence to all safety procedures.
TEAMWORK: Adheres to and supports company policies and decisions in a positive manner. Cooperates with others to ensure the best overall results for Silvan Ridge Winery.
OTHER DUTIES: Other jobs or special projects may arise outside the realm of this job description. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be comfortable climbing ladders.
