In-home caregiving is needed for ManyHands Maloney. ManyHands is a 57-year old double amputee (missing both arms) who deals with tendonitis and arthritis. Due to these factors, he needs in-home care with regular caregiving tasks such as cleaning, washing, meal preparation, transportation, keeping track of appointments, and so on. However, another top priority right now is helping Many Hands with a variety of organizational tasks, most notably sorting through the medical system in order to sort out doctors, insurance, et cetera, as his contact with previous doctors/insurance has lapsed from lack of caregiving to help him keep appointments and phone calls and he has not been able to get pain medication. Additionally, he is working on a variety of other logistical projects including managing bills, buying and selling a home, and more.
ManyHands needs a caregiver who is organized, professional, skillful, and able to organize and delegate to a small team of less-experienced caregivers. He is willing and able to offer a high rate of pay for someone with a high degree of experience and skill who can help him catch back up with his life and get things back on track so that he can get the medical support he needs and work on the projects he is working on.
ManyHands values compassion, warmth, connection, clear communication and boundaries, and authentic self expression. A sense of emotional comfort with someone he takes on as a caregiver is important and the interview process will include him wanting to get a personal sense of you and how he connects with you. He wants to know that people who are his caregiver are comfortable expressing their own needs and will speak clearly and directly if something bothers them, rather than stay quiet in order to be polite, and in return he makes sure to always appreciate people for expressing themselves. Though ManyHands lives alone and is able to care for himself in many ways, he is able to thrive and minimize discomfort with help from caregivers. This job is a lot about tracking his medical needs, and managing scheduling appointments, prescription refills, supporting care plans, and following doctor’s orders. It is also about companionship, empathy, and supporting the highest quality of life possible on any given day.
Tracking chronology and time management are very difficult for him. If you are helping him prepare for an appointment or getting ready to complete a task he will need multiple reminders/nudges to help him track the passing of time and how much time is left before needing to leave. Encouragement works best when it is firm, clear, and gentle, like a mama bear. Humour and jokes also help significantly.
