Position Summary

The Education Coordinator works with the Prevention and Education Manager to implement our HIV and Hepatitis C 101 education program and our HIV positive speakers program called the Speakers in the Schools program. We offer these programs to youth and adults in treatment and recovery programs, colleges, high schools, middles schools and other alternative youth facilities. This program spans multiple counties, each with their own unique characteristics.

The Education Coordinator builds and maintains relationships with schools through direct outreach to teachers to promote the program and through soliciting feedback from teachers and school staff. This position recruits, trains and support a pool of speakers, including Poz Speakers, who are people living with or affected by HIV. The Coordinator assists speakers in story and presentation development, schedules presentations and offers support and feedback. This position also recruits and trains new speakers and facilitates peer mentoring between new and existing speakers.

The Coordinator builds and maintains relationships with LGBT organizations serving school aged youth including GSAs. Through these relationships, the Coordinator provides education regarding HIV, Hepatitis C and STIs and also solicits feedback from these groups and makes improvements to the presentations based on the feedback received.

The Coordinator hosts seasonal events for LGBTQIA+ youth groups through the Camp Alliance program. Camp Alliance is a social affinity group for high school age LGBTQIA+ students throughout western Oregon that offers a safe space for youth when the regular school year may not be in session. Supplemental Questions

How would you reach diverse groups or traditionally underserved communities?

How would you pitch our education program to a school/community setting?

Describe your experience in the area of training: developing curriculum, training others, and providing technical support to others?

Scenario: It is the beginning of the school year and you are conducting outreach to schools where we have presented before to encourage them to schedule with us again this year. The teacher at a school in a rural, conservative area tells you that while she and the school’s administration are supportive of our program, there was an incident last year where a parent was very upset that her child was exposed to the material in our POZ speaker’s presentation. The parent was so upset, in fact, that she withdrew her child from the school. The teacher feels that it would be best to wait a year before having HIV Alliance come back – to let things blow over. What would you say, and what would you do?

HIV Alliance prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, physical or mental disability, age, sex, sexual/affectional orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital or partnership status, veteran status, political affiliation or belief, genetic information, HIV antibody status or any other factor protected by law or association with any of these classes, in its services, employment, or use of volunteers.

HIV Alliance is a community united to stop the spread of the HIV epidemic. We strive to create an environment where everyone is empowered to reach their full potential. We value the diverse perspectives that each of us brings to this work, understanding the influences of culture, race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, physical or mental disability, age, sex, sexual/affectional orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital or partnership status, veteran status, political affiliation or belief, genetic information and HIV status in shaping our life experiences. We pledge to listen and ask questions before making judgments, and to continue to educate ourselves and each other. We recognize that we will only be successful against the HIV epidemic in a culture where oppression is not tolerated.
