The Theatre program has a large and busy undergraduate, BFA-only degree program serving approximately 200 majors and mounting between 3-6 full productions per year, as well as many workshop and showcase presentations. The department also has a low-residency Master of Theatre Arts program that trains high school Theatre instructors.The Technical Coordinator for Stage Lighting & Sound will collaborate with faculty to coordinate an intensive Lighting & Sound curriculum and supervise undergraduate student crews. The Theatre department works closely with other programs in the School of Arts & Communication, such as Digital Cinema, Music, Art, and Emerging Media & Design, so the Technical Coordinator for Stage Lighting & Sound may be called upon to support these programs as well.This 10-12 month position will collaborate with faculty to train and supervise students working on departmental productions. The position will maintain the sound and lighting equipment for our 300 seat Main Stage, the smaller Black Box, and student showcase venue. SOU Theatre rarely hosts outside groups, but on occasion the position will provide lighting and sound support for some special projects.The position will oversee the hanging and focus of lighting and the implementation of sound reinforcement from designs provided by the faculty, guest artists, and student lighting and sound designers. Crews for these calls are made up of students, some who may be novices in these areas and will require patient training and supervision from this member of staff. The position will provide standard sound reinforcement for productions including annual musicals. Attendance at production meetings and technical rehearsals is expected.The Technical Coordinator for Stage Lighting & Sound will instruct up to one course per term.For the qualified candidate, this position may include opportunities to serve as the Lighting Designer for assigned productions. While their primary position resides in the Theatre Department, a smaller percentage of time might be allocated to offer lighting and sound support to academic programs across the School of Arts & Communication, such as Music, Emerging Media & Digital Art, and Digital Cinema, and the Oregon Center for the Arts.This staff appointment may be made on either a 10-month or 12-month basis, depending on whether the successful candidate would like the flexibility of seeking freelance production work over summers. A 12-month appointment will include an expectation of broader service responsibilities to production programs within the School of Arts & Communication over the summer months and support of the Master of Theatre Studies program.Minimum RequirementsBA, BS or BFA in Theatre, Music or related field;Experience as a lighting and sound technician for professional and/or university productions;Experience with the ETC system of lighting control, specifically ETC ION;Experience with intelligent lighting systems;Experience with live audio mixing and reinforcement including body mics; Ability to maintain and perform routine repairs on lighting and sound equipment;Demonstration of effective teaching and mentorship;Ability to work collaboratively and cordially with faculty, student performers, designers, technicians, guest artists and directors;The desire, ability, and patience to effectively teach and train novice students.Preferred RequirementsExperience as a Lighting and/or Sound Designer for professional and/or university productions;Experience with sound reinforcement for live music;At least one year of teaching experience in K12, Higher Ed, or professional training organization;Familiarity with the lighting and sound for film and television and photography;Familiarity with digital audio tools-QLab specifically;Familiarity with CAD and management software, specifically VectorWorks Spotlight and Lightwright.Essential FunctionsDuties - The following examples are typical work activities that are meant to illustrate the general range of work functions and are not meant to be all-inclusive or restrictive:(60%) Academic Coordination DutiesCollaborate with faculty to train students on proper use of stage lighting and sound reinforcement equipment during crew calls. Work with faculty to supervise the student lights and sound crews. The position will directly supervise students during crew calls.Maintains safe working practices and procedures and adherence to theater policies during light and sound crew calls, rehearsals, rental and production calls; oversees some night and weekend student production support crews. Attendance at technical rehearsals is expected.Coordinates with faculty to assign student stage crews and selects and schedules appropriate crews depending on type of production; oversees the activities of crews in setting up light, sound systems, and lighting related soft goods.Instruct up to one class per term.(30%) Facility Coordination DutiesManages and implements a safe, clean and efficient environment in control booths, lighting shop, and theater catwalks. Identifies areas needing repairs or improvements. Coordinates with the Technical Director and Facilities Management to improve building spaces.Technical support for Theatre includes, but is not limited to: maintenance of light and audio systems in the theater auditoriums, control booths, box office, lobby spaces, and rehearsal spaces. These include but are not limited to: lighting and sound equipment (control boards, speakers, microphones, lighting instruments, cable, lamps), and communication and monitoring systems. Responsible for proper inventory, operation, and timely repair of tools and equipment.(10%) Additional Coordination DutiesProvide basic lighting and sound reinforcement for special events or rental of theater spaces in coordination with the Department Chair and the Building Manager.Provide technical lighting and sound support for occasional collaborative projects with the Digital Cinema, Emerging Media and Digital Arts, Music, and Art departments.Technical support as needed by the faculty; other duties as assigned.Skills, Knowledge, and AbilitiesExcellent communication skills; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations.Demonstrated ability to interpret and consistently apply a wide variety of complex policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not always exist.Expressed ability to work with frequent changes in policies and procedures, under pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Demonstrated ability to proactively assess work operations and anticipate potential problems; ability to develop and implement strategies for preventing/resolving problems.Great ability to effectively perform work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature that requires access to information.
