Job Description
Wagner Engineering is looking for an enterprising Engineering Technician to join our team. We are a strong and cohesive team of engineers and technicians who enjoy working together on a variety of leading-edge moisture measurement technologies and products. The Engineering Technician is primarily responsible for working directly with the Engineers to fill an essential role supporting and enabling the design and development of current and future products. The opportunities to excel and be creative are diverse and include building electronics and mechanical prototypes, design validation, troubleshooting, testing, performing hardware mods and rework, writing test software and scripting, and more. The Engineering Technician in many ways is the “legs” of the product development process at Wagner and is involved in most or all engineering activities and thus has ample opportunities to grow.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical:
- Read and comprehend electronic schematics, design specs, component specs, manuals, procedures, and instructions.
- Operate electronics test and diagnostic equipment and software such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multi-meters, and in-circuit debuggers.
- Write and modify test software and scripts in Windows and Linux environments and for various test equipment.
- Practice methodical problem-solving and troubleshooting processes to characterize and analyze hardware and software failures and find root cause.
- Perform hardware modification, repairs, and fabrication on PCBs, assemblies, mechanical parts, and various prototypes and with associated required equipment and techniques (e.g., soldering and rework, hand tools, 3D printers, etc).
- Execute experiments, tests, and procedures and collect, review, and report data as directed by the Engineer.
- Thorough documentation:
o Use technical writing and documentation skills to record, organize, and report activities, measurements, analysis, findings, and results.
o Create and manage engineering project documentation and communications such as specifications, procedures, measurements, reports, and emails.
o Proactively seek to learn and meet expectations and requirements in various documentation contexts.
- Professionally, technically, and efficiently communicate with and manage sourcing of parts from third parties such as vendors, manufacturers, distributors, etc.
Operational:
- Capture and manage directives, deliverables, and priorities from the Engineer and take the initiative to pursue those objectives to completion while regularly and frequently checking in to provide updates and address any questions, blockers, or issues.
- Track and document all tasks, activities, and progress using approved task-tracking tools to provide thorough history and regular status updates and schedules to the Engineer.
- Follow daily task priorities while avoiding diversions/distractions, and exercising awareness to identify concerns and potential cause to adjust priorities and then communicate them to the Engineer.
- Exercise proactive, critical thinking and attention to detail to actively identify, pursue, and document anomalies, problems, and errors, and promptly communicate them to the Engineer.
- Think and plan ahead within the scope of responsibilities and tasks. Track and anticipate equipment, supplies, and other mission-critical items required to sustain or complete task directives and deliverables, and manage those requirements with a high degree of critical and proactive thinking.
- Interface and communicate efficiently with other departments (e.g., Production, Service) as necessary in daily execution of activities, tasks, and projects.
Other: (bonus qualifications!)
- Apply familiarity and experience with various CAE tools to create and/or modify mechanical and assembly drawings, 3D models, schematics/PCBs, etc.
- Travel occasionally to customer sites primarily within the continental US and Canada for field service, troubleshooting, and testing.
Requirements:
- Associate’s degree (or equivalent, e.g., trade-school) in Electronics studies and 5+ years proven experience as an Electronics technician, or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Flexible team player who adapts to changing priorities and works independently, and as part of a team.
- Communicate effectively, efficiently, professionally, and technically with team members, customers, and suppliers both verbally and via written mediums such as email, documentation, and reporting.
- Creative thinker and problem solver with a “get ‘er done” attitude, able to make things happen and push forward to solutions independently while also understanding when to seek help or direction.
- Practice excellent organization, time-management, and multi-tasking skills.
- Approach tasks and problems methodically and with strong attention to detail.
- Experienced at data collection, analysis, calculations, and reporting using applicable standard tools such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and similar.
- Some experience, at least minimal, with electronics and mechanical prototyping.
