Job Title: Advisor

Reports To: Career Build Manager

Program Name: Whatever It Takes

1. Primary Purpose

This position will serve high school aged students in the Butte Falls Charter School District in Butte Falls, Oregon. The Advisor position provides mentoring, support, and case management to students at risk of not completing high school due to critical issues including high absences and failing grades. The Advisor works in tandem with school staff, families, and other community organizations to ensure student success. The Advisor will strategize around engagement and support the students in our program through their post-secondary planning, including postsecondary education or career training, and will provide an array of services both school and community based, to the students enrolled in our program.

School and Community Connections

Establishes and maintains effective collaborative processes with school administrations and partner organizations. Works directly with Butte Falls Charter School District school staff at local schools daily to provide supports to our students

Helps build a “college-going” culture among students in our program and other students

Provides opportunity for students to engage in community service projects and internships with partner organizations

Connects community with classrooms via guest speakers and classroom presentations

Student Skill Building Services

Helps our students develop post-secondary education plans based on student strengths and interests

Expands opportunities for our students to participate in career-related learning experiences

Enhances access to occupational skill training, job shadows, internships, and paid work experience

Assists with the requirements for +Accounts our matched savings account program

Facilitates college, vocational training and work site visits

Student Support Services

Visits homes of students struggling with chronic absenteeism

Monitors academic grades, intervenes rapidly, recognizes progress/excellence

Facilitates tutoring, study skills training, and case management

Facilitates educational, cultural and recreational outings and experiences

Provides barrier removal support

Assists in leading our students to develop strong resumes through activities, awards, work experience, leadership and service

Provides follow up support into higher education, training and early careers

Relationships and Cultural Competence

Develops strong inter-personal bonds with families, youth and community partners

Demonstrates a passion for serving low income and under-represented youth and families

Demonstrates cultural competence working with youth and families from diverse social, economic, ethnic, educational and cultural backgrounds.

Mentors, advocates, and counsels our students to develop resiliency and strengthen life skills

Personal Skills

Ability to work independently and demonstrates strong initiative

Demonstrates teamwork

Demonstrates compassion and understanding to those who are different from themselves

Demonstrates problem solving skills

Possesses competent computer skills

Submits applications, service data and documents in a timely manner

Communicates professionally and maintains confidentiality

Provides coaching on college/scholarship applications, essay writing, financial aid and financial education

Qualifications

Bachelor`s Degree plus at least five years of relevant experience, or some equivalent combination of education and experience

Relevant experience includes youth development, prevention, anti-poverty program, or education experience

Experience in an alternative education setting highly preferable

Spanish speaking/writing highly preferable

Ability to provide outreach college/career preparation services to schools on a flexible schedule that includes at times working evenings, weekends, and during school vacations

A valid driver’s license, clear driving record, and reliable vehicle for outreach activities

Ability to pass a standard criminal background and driving records check that is acceptable to school district partners

Compensation

The starting salary range is: $47,000-$50,000 per year, plus a benefits package that includes paid vacation and holidays, medical/dental (after successful completion of a 60-day probationary period). Also included: sick leave, HRA reimbursement, professional development support, transportation mileage reimbursement and 401K Retirement Plan after one year of employment.

Gas stipend for any additional required travel to and from job site over 20 miles
