Primary Function
The OHRA Winter and Emergency Weather Shelter will be staffed 5pm to 10am and is a low barrier shelter. The staff are responsible for ensuring that shelter guests have their essential needs met and safety is maintained. Shelter staff are responsible for the operations of the shelter including cleanliness and security of the facility as well as the health and safety of the guests. Participates in monthly staff meetings and all required trainings. Cooperates with other staff to ensure a good working environment to the benefit of guests and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Facility Operations
Ensure safety and security of the facility by monitoring the cameras, conducting facility walk throughs every 15 minutes, and perimeter walk throughs once per hour.
Complete bag checks every time a guest enters the building and confiscate any contraband. Deliver contraband to Community Shelter Coordinator.
Continuously update the communication log in a timely manner with important details regarding the shelter.
Monitor the inventory of the winter shelter supplies.
Respond to emergencies appropriately.
Guest Services
Effectively resolve conflicts among guests and de-escalate potentially crisis situations.
Provide information to guests inquiring and offer known local resources and community partners.
Provide feedback to the navigation team, shift lead and the Community Shetler Coordinator about observed guest progress, guest interactions and guest needs.
To ensure safety and cleanliness, day shift will complete daily room/safety checks.
Maintain guest cleaning kits and monitor check in/out of supplies.
Assist with dinner and breakfast distribution during.
Housekeeping
Assist facilities staff with bunk turnovers by packing belongings, disposing of waste, and doing an initial clean when necessary.
Collect guest bedding and towels weekly, hand out clean bedding on laundry day.
Complete shift assigned chore list in a timely and efficient manner.
Assist guests with their personal laundry, when necessary.
Other duties that may be assisted, as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to work calmly and compassionately with individuals with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Maintain strong and appropriate boundaries with guests
Exhibit the ability to work as a collaborative and productive part of a team.
Ability to remain calm and de-escalate difficult situations when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
A background in trauma-informed care and de-escalation training
Knowledge and experience working with community partners who serve low-income community members.
At least one year of experience with people who experience homelessness, substance use disorder
