We are a wine shop in Portland. We are curious about wine from all its angles and sell wines from around the world.
We are hiring a Wine Shop Assistant & Contributing Voice. Ideally, you would have availability to consistently be here for our 30 hour/week workweek, plus flexibility to come in for special tasting events in the evenings. We are willing to consider a combination of part-time staff members if those seem like the better candidates, but our first choice would be one person who can consistently be here for our T-Sat 10-4 schedule.
Each member of our staff participates in the broad range of duties involved in selling wine to customers. Therefore the most important skill is communication, both within the team and with customers. We exchange a lot of detailed info with each other everyday in written and spoken forms. We need someone who is friendly, outgoing, and customer-service oriented with our in-store and online customers.
Passion for wine is essential! We have a diverse set of wines, hovering around 2000 different wines at any given point. While we don’t need or expect any member of the team to be familiar with every wine, they should feel comfortable with and curious about major wine regions. They should also be familiar with how to use wine resources to learn about wines — we have a broad clientele that supports a huge range of wines and often learn about a wine we’ve never heard of from questions our customers ask. Between all the members of our crew, we have a lot to share in terms of resources for learning about wine.
Ideally you would have initiative and wine interests of your own. We are happy to support your wine interests and see you contribute to our offerings (tastings, newsletter promotions, other events) through your own interests. Someone who feels comfortable writing and speaking about wine is a great fit for our team.
We have a functional e-commerce website and active newsletter, so it is important for us to find someone who is savvy with computers. Knowledge of Excel, Squarespace, and inventory management systems are extremely helpful, as is an attention and joy for detail. We are interested to start a wine club in 2025 and would benefit from working with someone who has experience running and managing a wine club.
We have a lively team, all of whom care deeply for wine and bring personality and a point of view to our shop. We hope to expand this further with another person.
