Job Responsibilities
Work as part of a team to restore native forests, prairies, and wetlands in the northern Willamette valley. The job consists of difficult manual labor outdoors in a high hazard industry during all kinds of weather. Requires heavy lifting and long work days. Specific job duties include:
Working with a crew of 3-10 individuals on various projects primarily in Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties;
Identifying common native and non-native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species;
Removing brush, and trees, from restoration sites by using chainsaws, brush cutters and mowers;
Conducting careful herbicide application to invasive species on a regular basis;
Maintaining restoration sites by using hand and power tools;
Able to work in uneven terrain, steep slopes, weather of all kinds, and maintain a positive attitude;
Planting bare-root and containerized plants, trees, shrubs, plugs and bulbs;
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must be able to show recent or relevant experience with outdoor or manual labor. Examples of relevant experience include construction, ranching, farming, landscaping, industrial tree planting, wildland firefighting, trail crews or other conservation work. Training is performed on the job. Specific skills applicants should possess include:
Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds;
Knowledge of native and non-native plant species;
Ability to apply herbicide and maintain an IST license;
Ability to regularly perform up to 10 hours of physically demanding and strenuous work per day;
Ability to work off trail, on steep and variable terrain, in variable weather, while maintaining a positive attitude;
Must display great attendance with no more than seven call-outs per year and three during the probationary period;
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs at a time;
Excellent spatial awareness, and the ability to read maps and be aware of ones location;
Ability to take direction from supervisors;
Ability to make independent, well-reasoned decisions while knowing when to ask for instruction;
Knowledge of the principles of operating and maintaining gas powered tools;
Utilize common sense to independently solve problems;
Proficiency with speaking, reading, and writing in English.
Scheduling and Benefits Package:
Work-Week: 40 hours per week (four to five 8-10 hour days each week). Scheduling to be determined based on weather and work needs. Overtime occasionally required.
Wages: $22.50-$24.00 /hour worked, depending on experience.
Paid Time Off (PTO): 80 hours of PTO provided on an annual basis. PTO accrued at a rate of 8 hours for every 175 hours worked, starting on the first date of employment.
Internal training program provided to all new hires and employees.
