At a Glance: Our Campus Services department is looking for a full-time Grounds & Nursery Services Specialist 5 to join the team. The Grounds & Nursery Services Specialist is responsible for maintaining the grounds and landscapes for Lower Columbia College's 40-acre campus in downtown Longview. LCC is looking for a candidate to contribute to the campus beautification process while maintaining environmentally responsible practices that protect the earth's natural resources. The Grounds & Nursery team is a diverse group of people with varying backgrounds contributing to the college mission. We strive for collaboration, communication, and the ability to work both as an individual and within a team.

The Grounds & Nursery Services Specialist 5 is 40 hours per week with a typical schedule of Tuesday through Saturday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. This position reports directly to the Director of Campus Services. In person work is required.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

While this position will have supervisory duties, it is considered a working supervisory position with the following workload breakdown:

Grounds Work: 80%

- Performs and lead other in planning, transplanting, mowing, pruning, fertilizing, and irrigating lawns, gardens, shrubs and trees

- Work with faculty and staff on community projects within the Learning Garden

- Ensure the grounds are maintained at the apartments.

- Conduct staff training with grounds personnel

- Seeds, mows, irrigates, sweeps, fertilizes, top dresses, edges and maintains lawns

- Plants, transplants, trims, and waters plants, trees, flowers and shrubs

- Assists with or prepares soil for planting seed, sod, turf, plants, trees,

- Operate and maintain irrigation systems

- Cleans, services, sterilizes and maintains tools and equipment

- Litter control and recycling activities

- Installation and repair of lawn sprinkler system components

- Labels plants and maintains records

- Applies pesticides and herbicides to greenery, plant material, flowers and shrubs

- Move materials and supplies

- Prepares soil for planting

- Uses a variety of ground tools, such as rakes, hand edger's, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, weeding forks, hoes, pruning shears, aerators, sod cutters and snow blowers

- Complete Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL) training program (Stormwater)

- Other duties as assigned

Operate Equipment: 10%

- Operate hand tools, shop tools, and other shop/grounds tools

- Operate Boom lift (Certification Required) Completed

- Operated UNO Lift (Certification Required) Completed

- Operate Scissor lift (Certification Required) Completed

- Forklift (Certification Required)

- Operate Flatbed Truck

- Operate Dump Truck

- Operate Tractor

- Operate Front-end loader

- Operate Snow Sweeper

Administrative Tasks: 10%

- Supervise work study employees

- Supervise part-time employees

- Maintain employee scheduling

- Plan and organize grounds and equipment maintenance schedule

- Help organize earth day events

- Coordinates, plans and prepares special landscaping projects

- Determines cost and availability of work material needed by reading plans and blueprints, inspect projects progress

Typical Qualifications:

- Minimum Requirements

- High School Diploma or equivalent

- Valid Washington State Driver License

- One year as a supervisor

- Effective communication skills

- Ability to work alone or with a team

- Previous experience or training involving grounds maintenance, gardening, plant care, cultivation, and landscape installation

- Ability to perform tasks while ensuring safety

- Basic knowledge/experience in computer programs/software (some examples include: Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, databases, etc.)

Preferred Requirements

- Pesticides and herbicides License

- Knowledge of irrigation systems

- Associate Degree
