We are looking to fill an important role in our small, family-owned company. Quality Control is a valuable step in our manufacturing process, and is essential to maintaining our reputation as a company where things are made well.
Settlemier's Jackets cuts and sews wool and leather material to build varsity-style lettermen jackets. We have been doing this in Portland for over 70 years, and our jackets are recognized across the world for their craftsmanship and quality.
As the final step before our jackets are shipped out the door, the Quality Control team inspects every part of the garment to make sure they are made to our high standards. This process is done by looking inside and outside the jacket, along every seam, all while keeping a close eye on stitching and construction details. Once the jacket is given the OK, it then gets marked for snaps/buttons to be added, which is also part of the position.
Our snap machines are operated by a kick-press system, where the operators foot presses a pedal down to create enough force to set the snap parts in place on the jacket. A steady hand and eye is required during this step in the assembly line. This part of the job would be learned over time not right away and we will provide all the necessary training.
The last step is brushing off any lint from the jacket, folding it nicely into a bag, and then shipping it out the door.
We hope to process dozens of jackets every day in this manner, by treating each and every jacket as if it's quality will speak for every other one we make.
Along the way you will learn about our materials, our color names, our jacket styles, about sewing techniques, and more about varsity jackets than you every thought existed!
Settlemier's Jackets is a small company, operating from our current location for over 30 years, with a staff of 25 people. Some here have worked for our company for over 20 years! As a member of our staff you will be able to be trained by many different people, with constant access to co-workers who can answer your questions and guide you along to becoming a kick-butt QC'er.
While no training is required, this position requires an eye for detail, patience, being able to stand at the inspection station throughout the working part of the day, and to sit and operate the kick-press snap machines in a safe manner. As part of inspection the employee must be able to read the detailed order forms to make sure the jacket is built correctly, handle scissors, work with a house-hold iron, and constantly communicate with co-workers throughout the day as issues/concerns arise.
Mistakes are part of the job. All we want to do here is make sure we find them and correct them before the product get's to our customer.
We are looking to fill a Full-Time position. As the weather gets cooler, we get very busy, and make lots of jackets that need to get finished and shipped out as soon as the sewing team is done.
Compensation is hourly. Pay starts at a certain level during training, then we will increase that over time as all the skills are learned and full-time status is maintained. While we do not offer health/wellness benefits, we offer PTO and Sick Time both, as earned. Pay is issued every two weeks.
Settlemier's is open as early as 7am to begin work, and closes at 5pm. You may choose a schedule within those hours, but need to start work no later than 8:30am. We have a parking lot for car parking, and are along a bus line.
We do not drug test. Must be at least 18 years of age.
We are an Equal Opportunity Employer, valuing diversity, with a staff whose family lines span the globe.
