We’re looking for a Yard Lead to join our Facilities team. This is a full-time position located on site at our salvage yard in NW Portland.

Job Description:

The Yard Lead is the primary person responsible for the day-to-day management of our reclaimed wood lumber yard. This role oversees all aspects of lumber processing, delivery coordination, inventory organization, and yard maintenance, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all activities. The Yard Lead will direct a small team of denailers and crew, providing hands-on guidance, prioritizing safety, and fostering streamlined workflows to meet business goals. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, experienced in reclaimed wood processing, and capable of identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiencies.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties:

-Salvage Lumber Delivery Management:

-Oversee all incoming wood deliveries from deconstruction projects and industry partners, ensuring timely receipt and proper organization.

-Communicate with delivery drivers throughout the day through Slack and texting.

-Coordinate delivery schedules and manage transportation logistics as needed.

-Track and record all external partner deliveries to ensure timely payment

-Lumber Processing & Yard Maintenance:

-Supervise the processing of reclaimed wood, including denailing, sorting, and preparing materials for retail sale and other uses.

-Organize and maintain proper inventory flow to ensure that all lumber is processed, categorized, and stocked appropriately.

-Maintain organized, safe, and efficient workflows for the processing of materials.

-Oversee the upkeep of the lumber yard, including general maintenance, cleanup, and equipment care.

-Oversee & Maintain Retail Inventory:

-Maintain proper staging of all processed salvage lumber to ensure it's ready to be brought into the retail bays as needed.

-Keep retail bays fully stocked with processed salvage lumber, prioritizing organization, accessibility, and timely inventory updates.

-Work closely with the retail team to forecast needs, plan inventory moves, and maintain consistent communication to optimize retail operations

-Monitor inventory levels to ensure no stock shortages affect retail sales or operations.

-Team Supervision:

-Train and oversee denailers and visiting crew in safe denailing practices, proper material handling, and processing techniques.

-Foster a collaborative, productive, and safety-conscious work environment.

-Address performance concerns, provide feedback, and ensure that safety training and operational standards are consistently met.

-Safety & Compliance:

-Monitor and address all safety concerns to ensure compliance with company protocols and industry safety standards.

-Ensure all tools, machinery, and workspaces are well-maintained and safe for use.

-Operational Efficiency & Problem-Solving:

-Identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, or operational challenges within the yard and implement solutions to improve workflows.

-Continuously evaluate processes and propose innovations to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and streamline labor efforts.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

-Proven experience working in lumber processing, reclaimed wood, or a related field.

-Familiarity with denailing, wood processing techniques, and reclaimed wood handling, a plus

-Knowledge of workplace safety protocols and experience implementing safety procedures.

-Previous supervisory experience, with a proven ability to lead teams effectively.

-Experience being the point of contact in similar roles; embodying the role of teacher, lead or guide.

-Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

-Strong problem-solving abilities with a proven track record of improving workflows and solving logistical challenges.

-Forklift experience a plus and the ability to competently pass the OSHA test

-Mechanically inclined with experience using power tools, preferred

-Experience working in outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions, strongly preferred

-Experience serving the public in a customer service capacity or related field, preferred

-Ability to work unsupervised or in a team environment.

-Clear communication with coworkers, customers, clients and the public.

-Current, valid driver’s license and ability to drive a company vehicle.

-Experience with Google Sheets, Excel, email platforms and google storage drives.

-Bilingual Spanish/English, a plus.

-Ability to work outdoors or in an indoor environment with minimal climate control.

-Ability to work in an environment with moderate to high noise levels & able to use proper ear protection as needed or when instructed.

-Ability to lift up to 80 lbs over the course of a day; handling power tools and hand tools; must be able to stoop, bend, prying, pulling and twisting.

-Use and maintain standard PPE applicable to job and work environment.

Reports to: This position reports directly to the General Manager and is supervised by Facilities & Woodshop Coordinator. This role interacts with owners, all departments, staff, external clients and vendors. No direct reports.

Hours: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Compensation: The hourly pay starts at $25/hour, increasing with industry-related experience
