Tile Production Assistant

Clayhaus Tile, led by a husband and wife, is a project-based artisan ceramic tile factory, located in the Central Eastside Industrial District in Portland, OR. We are seeking a Tile Production Assistant to help us fabricate our custom handmade ceramic tile for our largest endeavor yet in our company's 14 year history. (University student housing project-UC Berkeley).

Paid training will be provided, which typically takes about 3 months, so we are looking for people who can commit for at least 1 year. If you have other short term plans, this is not the job for you. Ideal schedule is 3-4 days a week 8:00am-4:30pm. (no split shifts will be accommodated)

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Tile Production Assistant will be crossed trained in multiple departments, but the main area of need is Tile Making working with Tile Extruding machinery. We are looking for a Team Player who is interested in a job in the Trades and who is self-motivated, accountable, responsible, and of good character. Having a work ethic must come naturally; this isn't a skill that can be taught, so please serious inquires only that match this description. Production is not for everyone; it is hard work. Must excel with taking direction and instruction from company owners/working managers. There is no middle management at this time.

Clayhaus is a small and mighty team and the job requires seamless collaboration in order to produce a tile product efficiently, accurately and to complete all customer job orders as quickly as possible. And because there are just a few of us working to meet critical job deadlines, we truly don't have the resources to deal with any outside personal distractions. Must be comfortable working directly for owner and working independently.

Candidate must have mechanical skills, an artisan eye, a working knowledge of power tools and are comfortable with operating production machinery. Forklift certification preferred; but not required. Can pay for forklift certification after successful completion of 90 day training period. Repetition with careful accuracy is a HUGE part of the job as is having a positive and collaborative attitude.

Candidates must be able to work in a variety of positions, i,e. bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting, standing for an 8 hour shift, and be able move quickly between workstations. Must be self-sufficient and work independently for the entire shift. Candidate must be able to work full 8 hour shifts, as no half- days will be offered. Typical shift for all positions is 8am-4:30pm.

Key Responsibilities

● Learn all aspects of product tile making

● Operating tile press and extruding equipment/machinery

● Ceramic tile making operations, including extruding, cutting, and pressing clay

● Loading and unloading multiple production electric and gas kilns

● Ensuring quality control and verifying all factory orders for accuracy

● Sanding and stacking off of tile greenware

● Meet and enforce consistent quality control standards

● Cleaning /organization of work space

● Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills

● Mechanically inclined; experience using machinery, power tools and production equipment

● Has experienced or is familiar with physically demanding and repetitive work

● Strong Math Skills and accuracy in counting and repetition

● Ability to see big picture with regards to production while simultaneously focusing on the small details associated with accuracy and quality

● Physical Capability. Must be able to move around easily and lift heavy material up to 50 lbs with agility and coordination

● Experience in manufacturing, factory work and/or studio environments

● Positive and fun demeanor-CAN DO ATTITUDE!
