Position Overview:
The Veterinary Technician will support the care and health of the College and Paws for Purple Hearts (PPH) puppies and dogs, including service dogs after placement. This role requires collaboration with veterinarians, health care managers, and program staff to ensure the health and well-being of dogs in the program. The ability to excite, inspire and educate post-secondary students about dog health care. The position includes managing dog health care, coordinating vet appointments, overseeing medication administration, and assisting in breeding and whelping activities.
Qualifications:
1. Education and Experience
· Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science, Psychology, Canine Studies, or related field; or
Master’s Degree in Human-Canine Life Science or animal-related field.
· Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License preferred.
· Minimum of 4 years-experience as a veterinary technician or related field.
· Minimum of 5 years-experience in breeding, whelping, and dog health care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Dog Health Care Management
Provide ongoing care and consult on routine and non-routine medical needs of BUCS and PPH dogs, both on-site and with clients.
Work closely with veterinarians and program managers to ensure dogs receive timely and appropriate medical care.
Maintain and update dog health records, including vaccination schedules and medical treatments.
2. Breeding and Whelping Support
Assist with breeding and whelping activities, including monitoring the health of mothers and puppies.
Ensure proper record-keeping of birth details, weights, and identification for each puppy.
Support the educational process by involving students in these activities.
3. Medication Administration and Health Monitoring
Oversee the administration of routine medications (heartworm, flea/tick control) and treatments for health issues, working with students as part of their learning.
Coordinate scheduling for regular health checks, vaccines, and vet appointments (physical exams, ultrasounds, spay/neuter, etc.).
Ensure proper dosing and follow-up care for all health treatments.
4. Veterinary Consultation and Care Coordination
Consult with BUCS and PPH veterinarians to determine when specialized vet care is needed.
Schedule and coordinate all necessary veterinary appointments, tests, and follow-up care, including outside vet consultations.
5. Student Engagement and Educational Support
Involve students in daily veterinary tasks, including administering medications, maintaining health records, and assisting in whelping and breeding activities.
Educate students on dog health care, encouraging hands-on learning experiences in the veterinary field.
