THE POSITION

The Department of Environmental Protection is on the lookout for an Air Quality Engineering Trainee to join their team in Dauphin County. In this role, you will embark on a comprehensive 12-month training program designed to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge required to become an Air Quality Engineering Specialist. Throughout this training, you will engage in professional activities that involve providing technical, engineering, and regulatory assistance to a diverse range of stakeholders, including regional staff, industries, consultants, environmental organizations, and private citizens, all concerning various elements of the Department's Air Quality Programs. Upon successful completion of the training, you will advance to the position of Air Quality Engineering Specialist, stepping into a vital role that contributes to the protection and improvement of air quality in the region.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The responsibilities are centered around the evaluation of air emissions from a technical and economic perspective, as well as the assessment of related air pollution control technologies. This role involves addressing inquiries, creating and updating necessary documentation and guidelines, and offering support to regional offices. Additionally, it includes the examination of Plan Approvals and Operating Permits that are issued by the staff of regional offices, ensuring compliance with the Federal Clean Air Act, the Air Pollution Control Act, and relevant regulations. The position also entails acquiring skills to conduct technical and economic analyses for various special projects. Furthermore, the individual contributes to the New Source Review Section within the Permits Division of the Bureau of Air Quality, where they review and draft technical comments pertaining to air quality regulations.Interested in learning more? Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with 60-minute lunch.

Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 3 days a week with supervisor approval. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $64,861.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITYQUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:One year of engineering experience, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; orA bachelor's degree in the field of engineering.

Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Conditions of Employment:This position will require possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.Other Requirements:
