THE POSITION

Are you looking to jump-start your civil engineering career? Join the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a Civil Engineer Trainee! This twelve-month training program is designed to develop the engineering skills, abilities, and knowledge required of a PennDOT Civil Engineer.Through on-the-job learning activities, you will gain exposure to engineering areas of design, construction, maintenance, and highway safety and traffic, which will prepare you to advance into a permanent position within the Bureau of Operations.DESCRIPTION OF WORK

You will perform a variety of developmental work assignments in all phases of highway and bridge design, construction, and maintenance, as well as non-engineering support functions. You will develop a basic understanding of departmental policies, procedures, organizational responsibilities, and workflow.Training consists of scheduled rotational work assignments in engineering districts to gain familiarity with district personnel and procedures, and to participate in work projects to achieve the overall training objective. You will also participate in classroom training as designated by the program coordinator.Work is closely screened prior to assignment and reviewed in detail for completeness, technical accuracy, and soundness of approach, both in progress and upon completion. Upon satisfactory completion of the training program, final job placement will be made to meet both the employee's and department's needs.Additional details regarding the duties of this position may be found in the position description.Work Schedule and Additional Information:Full-time employment.

Work hours are 8:00 am to 4:000 pm, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

Four years of civil engineering experience, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or

A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or in a closely related field, which includes or was supplemented by major course work in civil engineering; or

An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes possession of an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.

Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within six months of graduating with a qualifying degree.Other Requirements:PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
