We are looking for a Data Warehouse Engineer for a contract role in Horsham, MA – This is 100% remote now but will be onsite 2 days/wk once COVID restrictions are lifted

  • The majority of their work is going to be:
  • They will be looking at a database, in most cases, no ER diagram and data dictionary. They need to research the database and define what is going on with the data and how things tie together by analyzing the data in the database.
  • From there, they need to have experience or knowledge in building a table design in ER studio. This required documenting the tables, columns, data types, and definitions for all objects. The definitions mean looking up terms and theories on the internet to determine the term or asking a developer of the application database to define the field.
  • They need to fill in the mapping document that will explain how the data needs to flow from the source database into the warehouse and document any transforms required to take place. This serves two purposes.
  • It documents the requirements of the load for documentation
  • It defines how they need to build their query when the pipeline load is run.
  • They will be given a defined pipeline that is about 85% written for them. They need to fill in or adjust the missing 15% of the pipeline code, which usually is the source query they need to write to pull the data from the source and transform the data. This pipeline is already completed. They are not working on developing or building this pipeline unless Phil asks for their help, which would not happen until they prove themselves on the base work.
  • They will run all their code through a defined data factory run. They need to understand basic steps to execute the pipeline with defined parameters and then troubleshoot errors reported by the pipeline to fix their load procedures.
  • Finally, for testing, we use Querysurge. They need to write a query against the source and a query against the data warehouse that should return the same results. Querysurge will execute the processes and provide either a success or failure of the process. If there is a failure, they need to research and correct the issue or document why the failure is acceptable.

  • -They need to understand that they do not have a BA or tester doing this work for them. They are the BA and the tester. Knowing this when evaluating and letting them know what is expected of them upfront will help ensure we get people with the specific skill sets we need and have a clear expectation of what is expected of them.


    Responsibilities/Qualifications:
    • Performs data warehouse modeling, mapping and coding
    • Inmon with Kimball experience methodology
    • 3 – 5 years’ experience in data warehousing or ETL experience
    • Ability to perform independent data analysis on a database to define the data requirements and development
    • Ability to work with business stakeholders: Excellent comm skills needed
    • Top 5 technical skills (in order of importance): Data Factories (Azure), SSIS, Inmon methodology, SQL, Oracle, JSON
    • A person who can be placed in a project and work independently to directly interacting with a pharma operation team to gather requirements and support the data needs of the project
    • Analyzing and translating business needs into long-term solution data models.
    • Evaluating existing data systems.
    • Working with the development team to create conceptual data models and data flows.
    • Developing best practices for data coding to ensure consistency within the system.
    • Reviewing modifications of existing systems for cross-compatibility.
    • Implementing data strategies and developing physical data models.
    • Updating and optimizing local and metadata models.
    • Evaluating implemented data systems for variances, discrepancies, and efficiency.
    • Understand and translate business needs into data models supporting long-term solutions.
    • Work with the Application Development team to implement data strategies, build data flows and develop conceptual data models.
    • Create logical and physical data models using best practices to ensure high data quality and reduced redundancy.
    • Optimize and update logical and physical data models to support new and existing projects.
    • Maintain conceptual, logical and physical data models along with corresponding metadata.
    • Develop best practices for standard naming conventions and coding practices to ensure consistency of data
