Aerodynamics Engineer I

Summary of Position: The Aerodynamics Group at Leonardo Helicopters is responsible for prediction and measurement of aerodynamic loads, design optimizations, and analysis and test of aircraft performance. This position will contribute to US based aerodynamic activities and will participate in Leonardo Helicopter multi geography projects on advanced vertical takeoff and landing vehicles. The engineer will utilize their understanding of analytical techniques, standards, principles, theories, and concepts, along with knowledge of other disciplines to provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. The engineer will work independently to develop solutions consistent with organization objectives receiving general direction for work. The engineer will interact frequently with inter-organizational personnel and external customers, representing the Aerodynamics organization by providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop CFD models, conduct analysis and wind tunnel tests on aircraft and rotor/proprotor systems.

Prediction of air loads utilizing multiple software tools

Support the aerodynamic design of rotor/proprotor blades, airfoils, wings and fuselages of advanced vertical lift aircraft.

Conduct trade studies to optimize designs.

Predict the impact of configuration changes, ice accretion, and optimization of outer mold line and engine installations modifications on aircraft performance.

Support the development of test plans and reports in support of aircraft certification activities.

Support R&D proposals and conduct sponsored research in collaboration with partner companies.

Write and present technical papers to advocate Leonardo Helicopter technical capabilities.

Support the design and acquisition of wind tunnel models, the acquisition and processing of wind tunnel data.

Qualifications for Position:

A. Education

Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering plus 5 years of industry related experience is required; OR

Master's degree, with background in aerodynamic design and optimization or a qualification in aerodynamics, aerospace engineering, aeronautical engineering, physics, or mechanical engineering plus 3 year of experience.

An exceptional understanding of, and intuition for, fluid dynamics

B. Experience

Proficiency with analysis tools such as Matlab or Python.

Proficiency with CFD tools such as OpenFOAM, Ansys Fluent, Ansys CFX.

Knowledge of with surface mesh preparation using Hypermesh, or Star CCM+ would be an advantage.

Experience with geometry creation, simplification, and data management within CAD software, preferably CATIA

Specific experience with preliminary design and/or physics-based models along with rotorcraft analysis experience is preferred.

Experience working on a team for a complex engineering related project would be an advantage.

Ability to contribute to the development of new concepts and principles.

Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is preferred
