Job Overview:Responsibilities and Duties:The High School Counselor guides students in making academic and career plans. They also help students to overcome barriers to success. The High School Counselor provides aptitude assessments and individual planning to help identify a student's interests and abilities.Responsibilities and Duties:
Evaluating students' abilities and interests through aptitude assessments, interviews, and individual planning.
Develop Career and College Readiness curriculum, maintain it, and assess students; products.
Assist students with the application process to colleges, universities, and tech schools.
Maintain and assist students in using the school Naviance program.
Develop and maintain programs and events that promote a positive and supportive school culture and climate.
Identifying issues that affect school performance, such as poor classroom attendance rates
Helping students understand and overcome social or behavioral problems through classroom guidance lessons and counseling
Counseling individuals and small groups on the basis of student and school needs
Working with students to develop skills, such as organizational and time management abilities and effective study habits
Helping students create a plan to achieve academic and career goals
Collaborating with teachers, administrators, and parents to help students succeed
Teaching students and school staff about specific topics pertaining to planning for college or careers after graduation
Maintaining records as required
Reporting possible cases of neglect or abuse and referring students and parents to resources outside the school for additional support
Qualifications:
Master's degree
Supervised experience in an internship
Must have school counselor certification
Physical Requirements: must be able to maneuver in classroom environments and classroom spaces, filing, faxing, scanning, copying, mailing, making phone calls, sitting for up to two (2) hours looking at a computer monitor, using keyboards, and typing.
