We're growing our bakery team! The assistant baker role will be three days per week (see below) and consist of a variety of tasks including: retail/front of house, pastry baking and recipe development in collaboration with the head baker, dough shaping, inventory, housekeeping & bakery maintenance. The ideal candidate will be organized, attentive to detail and product quality, and enjoy baking, experimenting and working collaboratively with others. There's a possibility that this could expand into a full time role as we grow.
Dead King Bread is a sourdough bakery in northwest Philly that got its start making wood-fired bread at Germantown Kitchen Garden. We're now based at Manayunk Timber, a sawmill that specializes in lumber and furniture from reclaimed old-growth wood, and we bake a variety of naturally leavened breads as well as simple pastries and other goodies. We bake for deliveries and subscribers on Thursdays and Fridays; Saturday is our retail day (with a wider menu) when we get to visit and catch up with customers in person, have a fire outside, and drink coffee. We're hoping to add Thursday afternoon retail hours soon.
We're growing our tiny team slowly with a focus on quality of life at work. Making bread is hard, so we take any opportunity we can to talk about books, listen to music, complain and crack jokes while we're doing it. We take our breaks in the timber yard's tiny forest outside, design our space for ergonomics, and are slowly building ourselves a little library just because.
