Freelancers, Lighting & Draping, Event Installations

Freelancers wanted for Event Installations, Wedding Installations, Ceiling Installations, Event Décor, Fabric Draping, Event Lighting, Wedding Lighting

Hi! We are an event design studio, looking for freelancers for the lighting and fabric installation arm of our business. We offer string light, pendant light, and fabric installation packages, wooden dance floor rentals, and some fresh greenery installation packages, at several Philadelphia wedding venues. We install in unusual spaces, such as tents, greenhouses, and barns. Installations are usually in the ceiling and require a lot of work on TALL ladders.

This is a freelance position, not a job. You would be a subcontractor, not an employee.

Our wedding season runs between April and November. During that time, we have multiple install and breakdown shifts available almost every week, usually between Thursday and Monday, with most shifts falling on Saturdays and Sundays. Shift times are often early in the morning, between 5am to 11am, and sometimes during the day and afternoon. Very occasionally we’ll have late night breakdowns.

Shifts are posted about seven weeks in advance, specifying date, time, location, job description, etc. Freelancers can sign up for which shifts they would like to work.

Pay for new freelancers is $25 an hour, with shorter shifts guaranteeing a minimum of three hours pay, and longer shifts up to ten hours. Returning freelancers receive raises every season, with our most senior freelancers earning $50 an hour. Many of our freelancers end up working with us for years. We truly believe that paying our crew members well, and treating our crew members well, is the key to retaining workers who feel like partners and collaborators.

If you feel you have the qualifications (see below) to freelance with our company, we’ll schedule you for a trial shift, which is fully paid. If we’re a good fit, we’ll put you on our roster of freelancers, and you’ll have access to sign up for any of our upcoming shifts. You can sign up for as many shifts as you want. We simply ask that you commit to signing up for at least one shift a month, to keep yourself active on our freelance roster.

We believe our company offers a fun, inviting, and interesting work environment, and fair compensation. We believe in treating our freelancers with respect, understanding, support and kindness.

We train all of our freelancers on our designs and methods, but if you are interested in freelancing with us, you MUST…

Have at least a year of work experience, doing something that required skills that would apply in some way to what we do. This could include, for example …

- Any previous experience installing fabric draping, or lighting, or sets, or stages, etc, for weddings, events, conventions, etc.

- Working on the physical side of productions like concerts and shows, for example with set design, stage crew, lighting, rigging, etc. Anything that involved technical set ups in spaces, and ladder work.

- Working with large scale art installations.

- Working with large scale floral installations.

- Physical work that involved building or making things with your hands.

- Interior, industrial, or commercial design work that dealt with transforming spaces.

Be COMPLETELY COMFORTABLE working on ladders. This job is pretty much all ladder work … you will climb up and down a LOT of ladders. Big ladders, like 12ft A-frame ladders, or 20ft extension ladders.

Be able to lift 60lbs.

Be able to provide contact information for at least two former or current employers as references on your reliability and work ethic.

This is not absolutely necessary, but we highly recommended you have a valid driver’s license and access to a car. Our events are spread out at different venues around Philadelphia, that are not all easily accessible by public transportation. Of course we do have some hard-core bicyclists among our crew, who don’t mind an hour’s bike ride in 25-degree October rain at 4am. If that’s you, cool.

Though not necessary, any work experience as a designer or artist will also be taken into consideration. Our installations are creative designs, that do benefit from workers who have experience in, and an eye for, designing and aesthetics.
